There was plenty of celebrating at Swamp soccer at the weekend even from those teams that didn’t win! Maybe it was just the joy that the rain mainly stayed away and even the midges weren’t as hungry this year

PINK PARTY 2009
Here are a selection of photos from the recent Pink Party that was held in Sinbads in aid of cancer research
It had rained every day in the run-up to Kirn Gala and it looked set to continue as the forecasted break in the weather was nowhere to be seen. However, just as we arrived in Kirn the rain stopped and a wee glimpse of blue could be seen in the sky.
this year was even bigger than previous years with more charity stalls and more entertainers including bands, singers, dancers, Dunoon Guides and Brownies and the first offical apperance of Cowal Pipe Band. Also on the entertainment bill was those lively girls from the Inverclyde Waulking Group who are no strangers to DCR having recorded specially for us and can be heard here on our website.
As the crowds gathered the rain stayed off for Cllr Dick Walsh to offically open the event and to take the oppurtunity with the captive audience to tell some of his famous ‘Christmas Cracker’ jokes which brought great applause from the crowd or was this something to do with the appearance of Megan Strapp onto the stage. This was Megan’s third apperance at Kirn Gala and her too short a set got a good response, especially from her young fans.
The Argyll Majorettes were next and under the leadership of Coach Fiona McLaughlan the twirlers put on a display of dance and baton twirling. Nu-country band the Hell Fire Club had the crowd singing along and nicely warmed them up sufficently for the Inverclyde Waulking Group, dressed appropriately in traditional dress and sang Gaelic songs as they demonstrated the traditional method of waulking the tweed (bashing the newly-woven wet material on a table to the rhythm of the songs – which were often made up on the spot about the local gossip of the day, to soften and shrink the material) keeping with tradition the crowd was then entertained by the medal winning Christina Cairns Highland Dancers, firstly with the juniors performing the Highland fling and secondly theseniors performing aspecial dance choreographed to celebrate The Year of the Homecoming entitled ‘The Homecoming Broadswords’ which was very well received.
The Dunoon Panthers with their reputation to thrill with their 21st Century Update of cheerleading leaving everyone in the audience questioning their own fitness.
!Can anybody stop ‘Boris’ of the FC Top Gunge team, unfortunately Deep, Down and Dirty the Shearwater Marine Services team from Dunoon couldn’t stop them and lost 2-1 in the Mixed Final
The Men’s Final was between FC Top Gunge’s ’sister’ team FC Full Gunge and The Chocolate Men. The Chocolate Men had managed to win their semi-final with only 5 men an appeal by DCR for volunteers managed to boost their numbers to 7 for the final but it wasn’t enough and they lost the final narrowly 1-0.
The Mixed winners forgot they had to pick up their prizes but managed to find the energy to run from the campsite

The Winning Teams where made up from a group of friends who live all over the country from as far apart as Aberdeen, Bristol, Bournemouth and Glasgow. And if you thought some of the faces looked familiar you would be right as FC Full Gunge where the winners last year under the name of Team Rambos.
During the day our Roving Reporter Douglas was out speaking to the teams and the supporters as well letting everyone know what was going on with the matches. Next Paddington Bear went to visit Andrea and Michelle to see what delights they had to offer in the catering tent.

ARGYLL GARDENS 22ND AUGUST 2009
The Argyll Majorettes opened our Charity Roadshow at Argyll Gardens on the 22nd August
2009, all the sections from beginner to senior preformed individually before joining together in a grand finale where we saw 50 batons being ably twirled in time to the music much to the delight of the audience.
As well as performers on and in front of the bandstand there was also a tombola, the Rotary with their candyfloss machine, the Red Cross with their new ambulance and local artiste Bill Williamson. Bill was demonstrating and allowing people to have a go at throwing a pot on his potters wheel, he was very busy all afternoon with some people having more than one attempt!
We where pleased to be joined by L107 presenter Derek McIntyre who interviewed some of the entertainers, here he is with the Red Cross representative finding out all the services that they provide for people in our area.
Our special guest was Holly Ogilvie a new talent from East Kilbride, Holly is only 16 and is a singer-song-writer who has been gaing a followin in the central belt, she has also preformed to warm support in Dunoon previously and we were pleased she was able to join us today. Later on in the afternoon we where also treated to some more traditional songs from local singer Margory who sang a haunting lullaby about a lady who lost her baby while picking blaeberries.
Another new talent we had performing was the Cowal Pipe Band who had a very busy week, so we where pleased some of the band where able to join us on Saturday. Their first offical performance in their new uniform with their own design of tartan was at Kirn Gala on Wedensday night, followed by several performances during Cowal Games weekend.
Also in the middle of a very busy time where the Highland Dancers who had been competing at Rothesay Games before rushing back to show us some of their dances including the Sword Dance.
We would just like to thank everyone who joined in on Saturday from performers to those helping out with music and stalls and of course the audience for joining in.
Swamp Soccer New World Championships 2009
After a fun packed day on Saturday, the teams that where camping settled down for a sing-song around the camp fire, absolutely necassary to keep those midges away. The short sleep under canvas and the sight of muddy fields in June must have taken Victor back to his youth as he roused everybody at 8.30am with Good Morning Glastonbury; a strong cup of coffee and a midge bite brought him back to Strachur. The morning was taken up with the final league games with the winner of each league going through to the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals in the afternoon
The Hawick Fuddy Muckers play the Happy Mud Days in a league game, can you spot the cow. The Hawick Fuddy Muckers won 3-2
The Whitby Walrus keeping an eye on his team, he looks so sweet and innocent but you should have heard what he was saying to the FC Full Gunges’ Goalkeeper. However, it didn’t work as they lost this match.

If you'd like to say "hello" and leave a general comment,

I am not pointing the finger at you as you have hardly mentioned them-I’m talking about the Midges that were trying to beat thier outside event attendance record and the fact that everyone keeps going on about them.
What did people expect-stop and think – Garrel Fields Strachur, Three Playing Fields of Deep Mud-hundreds of pairs of naked legs and arms-what do you expect -an invasion of BUTTERFLIES – every midge in Argyll visited Swamp Soccer for a free meal. Looking at your photos I don’t see anyone suffering -even the little bear with the red hat and wellingtons seems not bothered-nor was I.
ALLAN TROY ( I was the one in the deep sea diving suit)
It doesn’t get any better, the Bear & Swamp Soccer. We had a really great time this weekend trying out the new tent, just didn’t realise what a serious game Swamp Soccer is and a fantastic spectator sport to boot.
Love the photos just so sorry we didn’t get to meet Paddington Bear although we did see him shouting orders to his team from the DCR roadshow stage . Well done every one involved.
