LONNIE DONEGAN MBE THE KING OF SKIFFLE

After paying tribute to Bert Weedon last week and the influence he had on many  recording Stars of Music this week we look to another artist who had a very strong influence on many recording artist

“Lonnie” Donegan MBE was a “skiffle musician, with more than 20 UK Top 30 hits to his name.

He is known as the “King of Skiffle” and is often cited as a large influence on the generation of British musicians who became famous in the 1960s and loved by millions of ordinary folk like DCRs Dr Phil and Victor

This week Mon 30th April to Fri 4th May I shall be playing Classis Tracks especially recorded from the vinyl originals and re-recordings of some of Lonnie’s favourite back catalogue from the famous 1976 vinyl LP “Putting on the Style”

The Guinness Book of British Hit Singles & Albums states that Lonnie Donegan was “Britain’s most successful and influential recording artist before The Beatles. He chalked up 24 successive Top 30 hits, and was the first UK male to score two U.S. Top 10s”.

Born as Anthony James Donegan in Bridgeton, GlasgowScotland, the son of a professional violinist who had played with the Scottish National Orchestra, he moved with his family in 1933 to East HamEssex (now in Greater London).

THE ORIGINAL BRITISH GUITAR LEGEND DIES AGED 91

At 91 years old the Legendry British Guitarist Bert Weedon has passed away

THE UKs ORIGINAL GUITAR LEGEND

Among the star guitarists who have acknowledged Bert’s help in their early days through his book “Play in a Day” are: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Brian May, Pete Townshend, Sting, Mike Oldfield, Mike Read, John Miles, Dr Phil, Steve Hillage, plus many many more. . .                                                                                             When Alvin Stardust visited us here last year he told us during his interview and set from the Legends Window that he recommended any one starting out to learn the guitar to purchases a copy of Bert’s Learn in a Day guitar tutor This week Mon 23rd April to 27th April we shall be looking back on the career of Bert Weedon and playing tunes by guitarist that have acknowledged they were influenced by him

With the coming of the Golden Age Of rock and roll, Bert was in great demand as the named soloist on no end of hit records, and his playing greatly aided the success on records of many of the foremost stars of the period.

Many  of the rock  n’ roll tunes played here on DCRs Rock Slot feature the guitar playing of Burt, early rock singers such as Tommy Steele, Marty Wild, Laurie London, Cliff Richard, Adam Faith and Billy Fury all asked for Bert to play on their records.

His virtuosity in all fields of music also enabled him to accompany such artists as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, Nat King Cole, Judy Garland and many top British stars, while at the other end of the music scale he played for Gigli, Paul Robeson and many others.

As a result of his exciting solos on the early rock records. Bert was asked by Top Rank to make a record as a solo artist.

Bert became the first British guitarist to get a solo record in the Hit Parade – the memorable “Guitar Boogie Shuffle”. He subsequently notched further hits with “Apache”. “Nashville Boogie”. “Ginchy”. “Sorry Robbie” “Tokyo Melody”. to mention but a few.                                                                                                  His L.P. `s have sold in tremendous numbers; “Bert Weedon remembers Jim Reeves” sold over 250,000 while his “22 Golden Guitar Greats” L.P. reached the No 1 spot in the Album Charts, and he once again made disc history by becoming the first solo guitarist to reach the coveted top of the Hit Parade – receiving both Gold and Platinum L.P.’s for his record breaking sales of over one million copies. The tremendous success of his L.P.’s and C.D’s ensures that Bert is still among the top recording artists of Britain.

Apart from his reputation as a session and guitar soloist he is known throughout the world because of his guitar tutor called “Play in a Day”. This is probably the best selling tutor in the world and Bert is proud of the fact that most of today’s top guitarists have told him that they started their first steps on the guitar with the aid of his book. In fact he has been nicknamed ” the Man who taught the world to play the guitar”.
His book is printed in several languages and has been published all over the world. The book has sold over 2 million copies and over 30 years on remains the world’s most successful guitar tutor. It has been awarded two Golden Pages in recognition of that fact. The first by Chappell Music Ltd for the sale of 1,000,000 copies of “Play in a Day”, and the second by International Music Publication for the 30th Anniversary Edition 1957-1987 of “Play in a Day”, which was presented by Mike Oldfield on the Terry Wogan TV Show.
Bert originally wrote it because he remembered the difficulty he had as a 12 year old with a battered guitar in his hand and not knowing a thing about it or how to play it. He was determined there would be a tutor that anyone could understand and learn from without a teacher, and by anticipating all the questions that a beginner would ask and answering them in his book, he was able to help most of today’s top pop idols on their way to stardom.

Bert Weedon and Alvin Stardust

When Alvin Stardust visited us here last year he told us during his interview and set from the Legends Window that he recommended any one starting out to learn the guitar to purchases a copy of Bert’s Learn in a Day guitar tutor

Through his book and television tuition it is estimated that Bert Weedon has influenced approximately 4 million guitar players over the past forty years.

APRIL FOOL!

APRIL FOOL IS DEAD AND GONE – YOUR A FOOL TO CARRY ON

April Fool Double Whammy!

This is a rhyme that children recite if anyone attempts an April Fool trick after 1st April and in some places after noon of the first day of April.

Not wishing to be deemed foolish the perpetrators of this morning “New Morning Programme” were quick to own up to the hoax and to apologize to any listeners of Celtic Music Radio or Dunoon Community Radio who were distressed, put out or felt a desire to complain at the loss of a well loved presenter or may have been tempted to change station.                                                                                                                                                                  It was also stated that Dunoon Community Radio Presenter Victor would, now it was known that he would not be after all be presenting the morning show disregard all proposals of friendship and marriage and return the congratulation card and present.

It is expected that the organizes of the hoax whose names have been withheld under the protection of Radio Presenters Data Act will in due course release a further more detailed “The Making Off” Programme

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A press release was released  this morning not to be published before 8.12am this first day of April 2011 in which the following information was given.
Two popular community radio stations from either side of the Clyde have in an unprecedented action decided for the benefit of their  listeners, or their morning listeners at least, to broadcast a daily morning Show  from the Dunoon Community Radio studio situated in the corridor of a Local Argyll Business Centre.
This programme will be broadcast simultaneously on 1530AM/FM and 97.4fm both at the same time together as well as the Internet Sites of both Radio Stations.
This initiative has been brought about by the sudden departure of Popular Celtic Music Radio Morning Mix Presenter Alex Jenkins who has decided to return to his roots and his beloved Radio Rock.
Alex has over time made this programme his very own broadcasting each weekday morning from the Royal City to Celtic Music Radio listerners on 1530AM/FM and for the last fourteen and a half months to the listener tuned in to Dunoon Community Radio 97.4fm.
It was decided at a hastily convened late night meeting yesterday evening of both Radio Station Boards that continuity was paramount and the “Show Must Go” spirit must prevail, this it was decided, was what the listeners deserved.
It was unanimously agreed by a near majority of board members to invite Dunoon Community Radio Presenter Victor to present a morning show to all the listeners of Celtic Music Radio and Dunoon Community Radio in a programme that would be broadcast from Dunoon.
The format for the programme will be decided by the listeners who will be invited from the very start to contribute with ideas and comments.
Victor has since Dunoon Community Radio began presented a Breakfast Show known as “The Late Late Late Very Late Breakfast Show” which has been broadcast at 5.00pm each weekday, the presenter has been known to comment that AM morning time programmes feel much better PM and presenters are usually more alert at that time to what is happening .
It has been agreed that the first programme in this  collaboration  shall commence at 8.00am this the first day of April with Victor in the presenters role
Victor At Celtic Connections 2011
Manran a Celtic Band On A Quest
Mànran ( tuneful sound or melody) are hoping to be the first band in the 21st century to take a Gaelic songs into the official UK top 40.                             Capercaillie  were the last Gaelic band to achieve chart success in the 20th century with the June 1995 disc Ailein Duinn (Dark Alan) which some say came about on the back of the success of the May 1995 Top 20 chart success for Runrig with An Ubhaol As Airde (The Highest Apple) .
Whatever, a great year for Gaelic with two Gaelic tunes in the charts 1995.
Latha Math” ( Good Day ) was  written by singer guitarist  Norrie MacIver who says  “it describes an idyllic and peaceful day in his native island of Lewis in the Western Isles.”                                                                                                                                                                                                            Norrie’s  band mates who like Norrie have been for some years entertaining the  crowds in Scotland and throughout the world in various line-ups are: Gary Innes (accordion),   Ewen Henderson (fiddle/ pipes) Calum Stewart (flutes/uilleann pipes) Ross Saunders (bass) and Scott Mackay (drums) Launching the single as part of the Celtic Connections Festival has proved to be very popular with the festival goers and the media attention around the chart quest has put them in the media spotlight.    Victor interviewed the band live for broadcast on Dunoon Community Radio through Celtic Music Radio Celtic Connections Live transmissions prior to the boys featuring on Reporting Scotland and on BBC online reaching hundreds of thousands of viewers in their quest for chart success and to support both the Gaelic language and traditional Scottish music.
In interviews the band have told of their reaction to recent events and their quest for chart success Band member Gary Innes, who as you all know is the captain of Scotland’s shinty squad (In 2010, Gary scored in the last minute to clinch victory for Fort William in the final of shinty’s premier trophy, the Camanachd Cup, to pick up his fifth winners’ medal) .said: “The reaction to Manran has been amazing, we have had so much support from fans and visitors to Celtic Connections with a fantastic reception at the 02 ABC and a great turn out at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and our promotional gig at Glasgow’s Apple Store on Buchanan Street. “We need to achieve at least 7500 downloads to make history and break into the Top 40 UK chart and we need all the support from the public to make this happen.
”Mànran maybe the hottest new band on the Scottish music scene and since coming together in June 2010 they have worked hard on their craft  playing at festivals in Europe as well as gigging here in Scotland but to choose to support Skerryvore on the eve of their single launch some may say risky others brave.
Playing to a packed house of mainly Skerryvore fans which must be said were in very high spirits having just enjoyed a fabulous lively Ceilidh set by Calum Iain MacCorquodale and Malcolm Jones Manran gave as good if not better than I think most folk expected,  from the very first tune with its “come on” false here we go starts winding the audience up in anticipation till breaking into a  crescendo of modern Scottish Celtic Sound combining driving accordion, fiddle, Highland pipes, Uillean pipes and melodic flute all kept in time by powerful drums and bass.
Listening to these new kids on the block with their powerful songs in Gaelic and English underpinned by rock steady drums and bass and watching the immediate delight of the audience I couldn’t help but wonder if Malcolm Jones he off Runrig fame, on holiday and with the previous act  was standing in the wings watching and listening and did his thoughts go back to the days when he and the rest of a young Runrig  were creating and sometimes without the delight of the audience the sound and spirit undoubtedly the forerunner to what we were now listening to now the sound of modern Gaelic Scotland.                                                                               The main thing lacking in their set and something only time will bring about was they sounded like a new band, a future excellent band, all the ingredients and the best of ingredients being there, they just need to gig more and a few more familiar tunes for audience participation and just a personal thing, not just for Manran but for all bands I Love singing along to the tunes but looking for lyrics sometimes can be a nightmare. To bring a little showbiz to the set they were joined on stage by legendary accordion player and musician Phil Cunningham who along with Calum Malcolm (Wet Wet Wet, Simple Minds and Runrig) produced the single and to finish in grand style the band were joined on stage by eight Celtic dances. I am glad I had this opportunity to catch Manran at this stage of their career and hope it last for a long time but these are six guys who are only too aware of the business they are in and their heads will not be easily turned nor can I see them being seduced by the business and as Gary Innes said of Manran in an interview after the concert “We want to do the best we can to promote the kind of music we all love and to further the Culture we are all part of, most of all we want to enjoy the experience that is Manran and to share it with our families friends and fans.  If it all ends tomorrow we want Manran to have been a fabulous experience for  everyone.                                                         I for one say Long may it last!
At the time of writing  Manran have  not have got into the UK top 40 (61) but have got number 1 in iTunes singer/songwriter chart, number 6 in the Scottish charts and number 6 in the Radio 1 indie charts.
Latha Math is still available for download  on iTunes, Foot Stompin’,   Play.com, MOG, Emusic, We7.com, Napster, Tesco digital.                                              And you can follow Manran  at  http://manran.co.uk/wp/ and also on Facebook and Twitter
THE IMAGINEERS IN THE STUDIO 3rd December 2010
As a prelude to their forthcoming Gig at the View the band : Steven Young, lead vocals, Lee Ballard, lead guitar and Alastair Greig , Semi- Acoustic bass visited the Dcr studio last night. The fourth member of the band Stephen Forbes ,drums and percussion had problems trying to get his kit up the stairs to the studio and spent the whole evening stuck on the stairs with his big bass drum( he has asked Santa for a Drum Tech/Roadie for Christmas )
The band who all hail from Glasgow first got together in the summer of 2006 When Ali out walking his Bass Guitar (apparently he never goes anywhere without it) visited the wee corner shop where he saw these two strange looking guys (Steven and Lee) pinning a notice on the wall advertising for a bass player to join a band. Informing the guys that he indeed was a bass player and this was a scenario from whence legends begin an audition took place there and then and Ali was given the gig.
Since then the Band have been working very hard cutting their  teeth as a bar band playing many chaotic nights in Scotland’s seediest lounges in order to pay their way, travelling where ever the gigs take them even to play gigs in Liverpool at the Famous Cavern and Zanzibar Clubs.
Having thawed out and with some warm coffee to help the circulation the boys then played a cracking acoustic version of their latest double sided single Mariana followed by Fairground. The band write all their own material and are just about to go into the studio to start work on an album with one of Scotland’s finest Record Producers and are hoping to release an E.P. very shortly. When it was commented on that quite a few of the bands recent songs could be classed as what some concert goers would class as anthems the band seemed well pleased they were viewed that way, first and foremost they wanted their music to relate to their audience and if this brought on a vocal response with the audience singing along then it couldn’t get any better.
Asked if there was a romantic even sentimental side to the song writing the trio played Shadows of Love which turned out to be a swaying arms in the air ballad just waiting for an arena chorus with a powerful bass line from Ali’s acoustic bass  augmented by Lee’s mandolinesk Guitar sound, this was soon  followed by Spanish Sands which convinced every one in the studio that we had better go along to tomorrow nights gig at the View prepared to sing.
In talking about their song writing it was hinted that Dunoons Puck Glen may feature in  future song as Steven finds it a very romantic place and before young ladies start camping out, Steven added it’s  a place he unfortunately doesn’t get to visit often enough
Well over the allotted time and with the pub calling the band finished as they had started with a brilliant stormer of a tune “The Imagineers” which had the whole studio audience singing along- the only thing missing –  ten to twenty thousand other voices but that surely must come and we can’t wait.
SKERRYVORE  AT CELTIC CONNECTIONS
It was only last July that Skerryvore sat in the DCR Corridor prior to their concert at the Dunoon Queens Hall reviewing their latest Album that they had just successfully launched the previous night at the O2 Glasgow.
Now after touring across the world from Chicago to Beijing with it here they are again at the O2 Glasgow for another Celtic Connections appearance by the band.
From the moment the first chord rang out it was apparent that this was what this audience was here to see. As the band weaved through their song catalogue selecting songs and tunes from their earlier first two albums as well as their latest it was noticeable that the audience where very much in tune with their work, more so than last July.
When Alex mentioned that this was the very first song he had been “forced to sing” by the other members of the band, members of  this audience had already screamed out the title as if it was “name this tune” and when mentioning that this next song was the first he had written the audience again  beat him in naming it.
The main difference to previous concerts was the audience reaction to the band from the earlier days when the “wee boys from Tiree” where playing the Ceilidh and ladies of a certain age who should have known better wanted to mother them the audience now consist mainly (still a few Ladies with mothering instincts) of mature Skerryvoreans who know the band, their history and a sign of true fan, knows most of the lyrics which can only be got by repeated listening to the cds.
From their traditional roots the band have developed their sound to embrace the sounds of modern Country Rock and Funk in a way that always compliments their traditional music and songs.
Their outstanding musicianship, their writing and arranging and the voice of singer Alec Dalglish now sit very comfortable across the band and with their gig dates getting larger by the day, this band seven years in and with a faithful following have it all there in front of them                                                                                                                                     Check out Skerryvore  http://www.skerryvore.com/
  9. Sorry you missed our April Fool says:
    Hi Willie, Hope you are well and thanks for the comments always a pleasure to hear from our friends outwith Dunoon and Cowal.
    I would imagine we will look at the logistics of a repeat of the April Fool Morning Show but four hours takes up a lot of space when you try to fit it in with the regular schedule. I wish we could take a lot of the credit for this but truthfully a lot must go to the team at CMR and of course Ross Macfadyen and Alex Jenkins who’s co-operation was vital to the Fool.
    Like you now that you have mentioned it I look forward to Duggie Days comments but he is a very busy man and of course with the time zones he may have missed it , obviously we couldn’t have warned folk by traileing it in advance, I think we need to send him a copy .
    Any more info on the Fool we shall keep everyone posted.
    Victor
  10. Big Texas Willie Misses Out Again says:
    Any chance of a re-play, plenty of notice if you do. Ever though of doing something similar with Duggy Day now that would be awesome and do a lot to promote you guys, I am sure having fixed it for the world to listen to the Games (looking forward to it by the way-when is the first trailer) you must be the guys to sort something with Duggie .
    Digital Switchover
    Hi Victor Just been on the phone to the digital switchover line and they have told me that for people who are on disability or mobility benefit to qualify for free help they must also be receiving another benefit such as income support or attendance allowance or pension credits If they are only receiving the disability or mobility they will still help with the switchover but it will cost a minimum of £40 I was also asked to send proof of my benefit to them which I found a bit odd as they had already contacted me saying I could get help and I could find no where on any of the information they are putting out that said I had to be receiving the other benefits So I think I will be heading of to one of the supermarkets and buying myself a digital box which will probably cost around £20 I would love to know what others are being told and if they find the information being sent out confusing June xxx
  22. JOHNNY CLEGG CD of The Week says:
    Hello Every One – This weeks CD of the week is something a little different but very special, It’s a CD I have known for a very long time but must admit did not rediscover it until recently after having a conversation with Rupert regards African Music.
    As you may be aware Rupert has introduced the most wonderful African Music to his R&B programme which includes the music from today to that of the past.
    I personally became aware of this music in the late seventies through what some may term as pop/crossover but nether less it made me aware of another culture and its music and just as important how that culture was being suppressed.
    Long before Paul Simon’s justifiably acclaimed Graceland brought the talents of South Africa’s black musicians to Western attention Johnny Clegg had conceived the idea of fusing black South African music traditions with western folk and pop music.
    Born in England to an English father and Rhodesian mother, raised in South Africa he befriended Zulu migrant workers in his white Johannesburg suburb and learned their guitar techniques and their language. He went with his Zulu friends to migrant workers’ hostels and watched and performed in their musical styles, risking arrest along the way. He studied Zulu at university and became a lecturer in Zulu cultural history before embarking full time in the ground-breaking multiracial groups Juluka and Savuka.
    Album of the week is JOHNNY CLEGG & SAVUKA- Heat, Dust & Dreams
    Which was the final CD before Johnny embarked on a still going solo career
    To discover more about this icon of Scottish music visit http://www.dougiemaclean.com and if you would like our copy of the CD, courtesy of Butterstone , first out of the hat Monday 14th March gets it.
  25. Dougie Maclean's Resolution- CD of The Week says:
    Hello Every one again, here we are another week and another CD of the week this time though the choice was easy.
    The response from listeners last week to the tracks we played from this the latest album from Dougie MacLean Resolutions left us with no choice but to make this our record of the week Dougie MacLean is one of Scotland’s most successful, respected and popular musicians.
    a Singer-Songwriter, a Composer and a ‘magical’ Performer, a fine guitarist and a fiddle player.
    Dougies most famous pieces include “The Gael”, from his 1990 album The Search, which was adapted by Trevor Jones as the main theme to the 1992 film Last of the Mohicans; and for Caledonia, from his first album, which has been covered by numerous singers and groups and to many Scots is the unofficial anthem of Scotland.
    In 2011, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE). So I may have to refer to him every now and then as Sir, Listen and enjoy and if you are not to busy, listen to the lyrics, always meaning in this man’s songs.
  26. Todd & Beady Eye at The Barras (not together) says:
    Beady Eye at Barrowland
    Let’s get the controversy out of the way first, the only near controversial thing said by Liam all night was to ask them that have been sitting on the fence to get off “Cause I think some of you have been sitting on it ,Yeah?”
    Liam and the guys were in Top form hammering through the whole of Different Gears with the audience singing along word perfect which pleased Liam no end and seeing the album has only just got released he should be well pleased.
    Liam has never been in such good form or voice smiling as the chants of “Liam! Liam!” filled the Barrowlands between the songs.
    The band played better than ever with Andy Bell’s solo on The Rocker just awesome, after a brilliant The Beat Goes On Liam apologised that there was only one song left as that was all they had, but promised to come back next year with more, they then played the epic psychedelic ‘The Morning Son’ with Liam in his typical front man pose lapping up the response from the audience.
    After leaving the stage with roars of approval they returned for a brilliant rendition of Sons of the Stage.
    I would think Beady Eye would be well pleased with the performance tonight,
    the audience at the Barras certainly was.
    Mod Todd
  41. CD OF THE WEEK says:
    Hello every one, the CD of the week this week is a strange one in as much that none of the tracks from the album where chart hits, in fact, none of the tracks even got in the charts. What started out as a Hi Fi demo recording for a Hi Fi manufacture to demonstrate the fidelity of the company’s state-of-the-art audio equipment so impressed the Company they financed an entire album and created a new record label to release it.
    The Band from Glasgow, the year 1984.
  43. Adam Faith on TLLLVLBS says:
    Hi Victor, Adam Faith was my first crush and I had all his singles and LPs which over the years have all sadly gone,how suprised and delighted I was to hear you and Luke talking so affectionaly about him and playing some of his early hits with John Barry and you mentioned a favourite of mine I Survive.
    May I request that at some time in the future you could consider I Survive as your Album of the Week this LP came out in July 1975 and helped me get through a significant period in my life, but alas the LP is long gone and when Terry (Adam) Died so tragically in March 2003 I tried so hard to find a copy of it and whenever I see LPs in charity shops I always have a wee peek although I don’t know why, I no longer have the means to play it. The LP has artist such as Richie Blackmore and Russ Ballard and Linda and Paul McCartney performing and is really worth your consideration. I am sure your Listener who you keep referring to wouldn’t mind listening and sharing this with me, you could refer to us now as your Listeners .All the best for your programme I Listen almost every day . I was known as Bella in those days but you may call me Mrs Bella x
    Hello Everyone
    It’s my turn to be back on air again this Tuesday 25th Jan with Vinnie Thom’s Soultrain but as so much has been happening across in Glasgow with Celtic Connections 2011 I thought as we are half way through the festival we could reflect on what’s been happening there so far.I shall be talking about and playing music from artist as diverse as Tom Jones, Sharon Shannon, Manran, Love and Money, Mavis Staples, Skerryvore and near local singer songwriter Angela Duncan from the Isle of Bute.
    Also a quick look at the vibrant Folk scene that certainly is and not just during Celtic Connections.
    I look forward to talking to you then and in the meantime if there is anything you would like me to mention, pop it in the Leave a Reply box at the bottom of this page.
    And for all you Soul Fans I shall be back 8th February on track with Vinnie Thom’s Soultrain
  46. Handbags to the middle says:
    Hello Everyone,
    I thought for my first Soul Train of 2011 we could remember those days of Disco with you girls dancing in a circle around your hand bags whilst us boys tried to pluck up the courage to approach to ask for a dance and suffer the embarrassment of suddenly becoming invisible-well to you girls anyway but not to our mates rolling in laughter at our courtship skills. Yes, mostly Cheesy and sometimes even Sleazy but occasionally the only place to hear those fabulous tunes now known as Classic Soul Sounds. So chain your designer handbags to your ankles before you carefully place them anywhere whilst I cherry pick just a few of those Classic Disco Soul Sounds hopefully with a little input from you -till Tuesday then -Victor
