  5. sarah t says:

Jamaica is widely acknowledged as the birthplace of reggae music.
Reggae music is relatively young in the scope of world music having started in the 1950s. It grew out of political and social upheavals of the Caribbean in the 1950s, and became the “sound” of Jamaica by the 1970s. Some reggae stars, notably Bob Marley, became crossover standouts who influenced musicians of many other genres.

    Reggae Roots
According to Reggae.com, reggae derived from Jamaican musicans who mixed the calypso, rhythm and blues and ska they heard on American and Caribbean records and radio. The basic core of reggae is the tightly-synchronized bass and drum rhythms with staccato guitar strums with a “one drop” feel. The musicians avoid playing on beat one and instead emphasize beat three in a normal bar of 4/4 timing. A typical reggae song has a slow to medium tempo. Even dance songs tend to be driven by repetition of rhythms and thick bass lines instead of a fast drum beat like most rock and pop music.

ps I’m also going to play a beautiful track by artist Dean Owen called ‘Raining in Glasgow’. This is from the album ‘Whiskey Hearts”. Have a wee listen, you’ll love it :) Not much good at talking about me so here’s my biog written by someone else – Edinburgh based Dean Owens is one of Scotland’s most acclaimed and established singer / songwriters.

Previously the front-man of the much loved and lauded Americana act ‘The Felsons’, Dean has subsequently been recording and touring as a successful solo artist.

His first two solo albums ‘The Droma Tapes’ and ‘My Town’ were both very successful and attracted significant critical acclaim on release, while his new album ‘Whisky Hearts’, generally agreed to be his finest work to date, gained its full commercial release on Navigator Records in September 2008.

The album was the subject of a major national advertising campaign by A track from ‘Whisky Hearts’ also recently appeared on a ‘Rock n’ Reel’ cover CD, exclusively featuring Navigator Records artists, in the August, 2008 edition of the magazine.

My sweet tooth took me a wander into Crazy Cakes at 5 Hillfoot Street, Dunoon today. I met cake designer and owner, Graham Wallace. He makes cakes in there for all occasions. I had a giggle to myself at the the ‘Divorce Cake’ he can make.

The lay out of the shop is fresh and modern but most important, the cakes are super fabby. The decorated cakes on display are very intricately designed, with a lot of care and attention to detail taken to create such masterpieces .
As the cakes made to order as you wish, you can be safe in the knowledge that its freshly baked. I looked at many pictures of the cakes Graham had made for many customers. I was in awe of the amount of different designs. Be assured though, there are some pretty humerous designs also. He caters to all tastes.

As well as top quality baking, the taste of the cakes are gorgeous.
Amy got to sample one of the beautiful cupcakes and thoroughly enjoyed it – wee witch wouldn’t save me a bit. It came in a lovely dainty wee box. So cute, lovely wee treat for someone special or even just yourself.

The shop will be closed for two weeks shortly but be assured Graham will be back to make us all fat with his cakes…..as well as making cakes for special occasions and special people.

Graham will be popping into the DCR studio in a couple of weeks for a bleather about his new buisness and the effort that goes into making his extra special cakes.
