SNOOP DOGG UPDATE
Snoop Dogg has change species, and musical direction (you could argue that he’s not rapped for years but for arguments sake lets just say he has), as he has taken up the new mantra of SNOOP LION, to go with his new reggae direction.
From his ‘Deep Cover’ beginnings as a young sidekick with Dr Dre, Snoop’s career has seen him star on two of the 90′s greatest hip-hop albums (Dre’s The Chronic and Snoop’s own Doggystyle) and, more recently, work alongside Katy Perry and Big Time Rush.
With Reincarnated, Snoop looks to reclaim the more revered moments of his career like what he saw in the 90′s, hopefully putting his shameless turns on a number of pop tracks over the past few years behind him.
This new reggae direction has thankfully helped Snoop put another few things behind him, as the enlightenment of Rastafarianism, (yes he’s changed faith too) and the music it helps him create, has helped him leave behind his bad boy, gangster image.
Gone are tracks like ‘Murder Was The Case’ and ‘Serial Killa’ and instead Snoop is singing songs like ‘No Guns Allowed.’
Recorded in Jamaica, with the blessing of Bob Marley’s family given to him, Reincarnated, will be released thorugh Snoop’s own Doggystyle label later this year. The first single from the album, ‘La La La’, is out now.

It seems the word you hear the most in Accra is no longer “akwaaba” or even “chale”, but “azonto”. The azonto dance has taken Ghana by storm AND AFRO HOUR WILL BE TESTAMENT TO THIS
WITH POWERFULL MIXES FROM TWO OF GHANA’S FINEST DEEJAYS DJ BLACKO AND DEEJAY DANGEROUS
SO MY FRIENDS JOIN THE FUN AT 8PM SUNDAY
Azonto is an essential part of Accra’s bustling fishing communities. In Jamestown, music blaring from speakers prompts children and adults to break into step.
Some dance crazes last barely longer than the time it takes to flip to another radio station. Others prompt Mexican waves of booty-shaking across borders. Thus, Ghana’s Azonto, in which the dancers mime everyday activities, has taken over dancefloors across Africa, Europe and the US.
Azonto originated among the Ga people of Ghana. Like their Apaa (“work”) jig, revellers wash, drive or dial phones to the tune of a hip-shaking beat, a jived-up version of charades. “Even old people love it,” said Julie Quaye, a 53-year-old housekeeper. “It’s the expressive nature of it – you can do anything creative with it.” Unabashed, she showed off the latest moves learned from her teenage son, one of thousands who throng to monthly “dance-off” competitions in Ghana’s clubs and beaches.
It is of course not the first dance craze to ripple through west Africa. In Ivory Coast the bird flu dance – intended to provide comic relief as the virus hit west Africa – rapidly spread to neighbouring Togo and Benin, while the bobaraba (“big bottom”) prompted a rush for “bottom enhancers” from dodgy market sellers.
But Azonto is one of the few to make the leap north to western capitals, featuring on the clubbing scene from Amsterdam to Paris. Since entering the UK mainstream this year, the foot-twisting bug has been adopted by Prince William and Piccadilly Circus performers, and even invaded school PE classes.
Some see its roots in the snake-hipped performances of Congo’s Kanda Bongo Man, but fishing communities such as Jamestown, overlooking the sea in Ghana’s capital of Accra, are indisputably its spiritual home. From behind pastel-coloured walls and traditional palace murals, the catchy music spills into the streets and is lapped up by passersby.
On Sundays, some churchgoers practice an adapted version – Chrizonto – while enthusiasts can be spied in music-filled funeral processions winding their way down Jamestown’s hilly roads. “It’s a good way to honour the dead, isn’t it?” said Richard Aryee, a coffin-bearer on a recent Saturday, breaking into step beneath the casket balanced on his head.
International footballer Asamoah Gyan celebrates goals with it, making the dance as much a national rallying point as Ghana’s Black Stars team. It has even gone academic; the University of Ghana plans to look into “harnessing Azonto for Ghana’s socio-cultural and economic development”, and has recruited Azonto’s biggest champion, Sarkodie, who describes himself as a “rapaholic”.
“Even the name is crazy,” said Accra resident Ramsey Taiwo, who teaches Azonto boxercise with his twin brother, Shady, in between starring in music videos. Enthusiasts wanting to learn have come from as far afield as Germany, they said.
Earlier this year, Kwaku Ageyman, a London-based fitness trainer, was watching music videos with friends who had come back from holidays in Ghana. “Azonto was everywhere. I was thinking how about putting some of the moves together in a fitness class for some of the African ladies that wouldn’t normally go to the gym,” the 25-year-old Londoner said.
The popularity of the class spiralled. Ageyman found himself teaching moves such as “scratch your back” and “hustling” in school PE lessons and hen night classes.
The dance’s popularity has soared in Europe with the arrival of chart-busting Afrobeats hits, a term spanning west African dancehall to hip-hop. Nigerian Afrobeats frontman D’Banj was so impressed by one enthusiast’s YouTube videos – whose White Boy Azonto! racked up over a million hits – that he recruited him to perform an Azonto jig in his music video Oliver Twist, itself another popular Nigerian dance.
Closer to home, where Afrobeats staples have long lent themselves to a dizzying plethora of dance fads, Azonto faces stiffer competition. In Ghana, the Amanda, nicknamed “African Salsa”, is threatening to knock Azonto off its perch.
However, the craze clearly has wide appeal as it can even be found in Nigeria – although the country’s long-running cultural rivalry with Ghana means it is embraced only grudgingly there.
On Lagos’s Alpha beach, to the blare of music from a mobile phone plugged into speakers, Jibril Tenney energetically demonstrated current popular Nigerian dances. Azonto didn’t feature. “[Nigerians] have already had the Yahozee, something like our own Azonto, so it’s nothing special for us,” he said.
That didn’t stop him from leaping into a backward shuffle, startling nearby idlers, when a popular Azonto track began playing from the speakers.
“Is it from Ghana? We play all the Azonto tracks by Nigerians,” said Alex Kpelle, the owner of the chic rooftop De Marquee club in nightlife-loving Lagos. Later, as the packed room erupted over Nigerian wunderkind WizKid’s Azonto Freestyle. he added: “It’s like a magic word; look around, nobody can sit down.”

The Voice coach and The X Factor judge will go head to head to be crowned queen of the music awards at a ceremony in Liverpool’s Echo Arena on?3 November.
Jessie J swept the board at last year’s Mobos, picking up four out of the five gongs for which she was nominated – best UK act, best newcomer, best song for Do It Like A Dude and best album for Who You Are.
But she could lose her crown to rival Tulisa.
Also in the running for the best female title are Emeli Sandé, along with Jay-Z’s protégée Rita Ora, former X Factor contestant Rebecca Ferguson and Running singer Jessie Ware
Plan B and Emeli Sandé – the Scots singer riding high on the success of her performances at the Olympics opening and closing ceremonies – lead the nominations with five nods each.
Rapper, actor and director Plan B – real name Ben Drew – is up for best male, best hip-hop/grime act, best video, best song and best album for Ill Manors; the soundtrack to his directorial debut, a gritty crime drama, which he also wrote.
As well as best female, Sandé is nominated for best R&B/soul act, best video for My Kind Of Love, best song for Next To Me and best album for Our Version of Events.
Hot Right Now singer Rita Ora and artist and producer Labrinth follow with four nominations each. Ora has been nominated for best female, best video for RIP featuring Tinie Tempah, best album for Ora and best newcomer. Tempah also features on Labrinth’s Earthquake, which is up for best song.

History of the MOBO Awards
The MOBO Awards were launched in 1996 and were the 1st black awards show in Europe. The Awards attract the largest prime time multicultural audience and boast broadcast access to over 250 million people. The MOBO Awards have paved the way for other outlets of urban music such as MTV Base, BBC Radio 1Xtra and Channel U, which before MOBO did not exist.
The MOBO Awards were created to represent music (of black origin) and urban culture, and the music is used as a symbol for the black experience as a whole. The MOBOs aims to reward those with talent and determination, not just with accolades but also financially, as well as honouring the past and inspiring the future.
MOBO is young, social, driven and positive and the brand stands for integrity, passion, faith, achievement and making a difference.
The Artists
Over its 15 year history MOBO has played host to the music industry’s finest, witnessing jaw-dropping performances from both UK and international talent. As well as performing at the first annual Awards in 1996, Lionel Richie also received The Lifetime Achievement award.
Over the years A-list artists have included, Janet Jackson, Dionne Warwick, Justin Timberlake, Tina Turner, Dizzee Rascal, Jay- Z, JLS, Tinchy Stryder, Keri Hilson, JLS, David Guetta & Kelly Rowland and N-Dubz to name but a few.
In 2005, MOBO celebrated its 10th Anniversary, opening the show with a performance by former Fugees band member Lauryn Hill and closing with an explosive collaboration by the Marley Brothers in tribute to their father, the late Bob Marley. As well as international talent MOBO has been the stepping stone in the careers of numerous UK artists such as Sway, Lemar, Jamelia, the Sugababes and Estelle.
Broadcasters
The show was screened on ITV (Carlton Television) from 1996 through to 1998 before moving to Channel 4 until 2003. Since 2004 the Awards have been broadcast by the BBC, and in 2006 the show was screened live to air for the first time in MOBO history on BBC Three, and repeated two days later on BBC1.
MOBO in 2009
In 2009 the MOBO Awards left London for the first time in its 13 year history and came to Glasgow’s Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) on September 30th.
The event was watched live by a capacity audience of 25,000 as well as live and pre recorded broadcast coverage on BBC.
Hosting the iconic awards saw Scotland welcome an entourage of A-List musicians and celebrities as well as thousands of music fans and will reinforced Glasgow’s reputation as a world class destination for hosting music events and emphasise its status as UNESCO City of Music.
The MOBO Awards were secured for Glasgow and Scotland through a partnership of EventScotland, the national events agency, and Glasgow City Marketing Bureau (GCMB) and also have the support of Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Government.
KANYA KING – CEO
Kanya King MBE is an internationally recognised entrepreneur and innovator in the British music industry.
As CEO and founder of MOBO, Kanya King is the dynamic force behind the MOBO Awards and has played an instrumental role in elevating black music and culture to mainstream popular status in the United Kingdom.
Raised in Kilburn, North West London by her Ghanaian father and Irish mother, Kanya is the youngest daughter of nine children and grew up listening to and being inspired by black music. Whilst studying English Literature at Goldsmiths College in London, Kanya decided to organise her own live music events to highlight both the importance of and public demand for music of black origin.
“One of the most powerful movers and shakers in this country”
Evening Standard
Whilst working as a TV researcher, Kanya came up with the idea of an awards ceremony with mass-market appeal, which would celebrate these specific genres and music influenced & inspired by black music.
Kanya’s overwhelming desire to succeed eventually led her to re-mortgage her house to raise the necessary finances to launch the first MOBO Awards. As well as funding the TV broadcast, Kanya organised the whole event in just 6 weeks.
“She’s one of the most powerful women in the music business.”
Express Newspapers
The hard work paid off and the show was a spectacular success attended by the likes of Tony and Cherie Blair, Lionel Richie and Gabrielle. Now in its 14th year, the MOBO Awards is firmly established as one of the most prestigious events in the entertainment calendar.

E4 records urban music drama
The UK urban music scene will be the backdrop for a new drama to air on UK diginet E4 and produced by the makers of Rev and Friday Night Dinner.
Youngers (8×30?), from Big Talk Productions, tells the story of a group of friends trying to negotiate teenage life in a world where image is more important than exam results.
The series is written by Levi David Addai (My Murder), Georgia Lester (Skins) and Mark Catley (Casualty). Youngers will also mark the drama directing debut of Anthony Philipson (24 Hours in A&E, Coppers).
It will be exec produced by Big Talk CEO Kenton Allen and Luke Alkin. Radford Neville will produce. Youngers will air on E4 in 2013, with BBC Worldwide picking up distribution rights.

I have been playing this artist for sometime DON G
so its time to set it on the table, i was lucky to hear him on the now legendary show that is Ever Blazing Friday on http://www.globallinkzradio.com and the new artists chart with Empres Skortcher, This chart championed new artists in reggae music ,i got talking to don-g he sent me tracks which i played on reggae reggae sauce and on urban music box , as i see him as a positive youth artist , someone for the youth to look up to, Mr d of afrikan vybz worldwide crew who does the afrikan vybz mix for reggae reggae sauce got to hear the don -g sound and said he had an interest in signing and promoting this then unsigned raw artist , i knew as the boss victor had said to me mr ds love for the music is 2nd to none don-g will be in the right place, so i contacted don g and told him that mr d wanted to be his manager , the two linked up and im glad to see don-g is growing more as a positive artist .
