Neil Sturgeon Plays With Fire.

Neil Sturgeon in the DCR Studio

Glasgow musician Neil Sturgeon came in

to the DCR studio on Cowal Games Friday to treat us to an acoustic set of new and old material. As part of The Anything Goes way of life there was no set plan, just go with the flow and flow it did. Neil’s been working  hard as a musician over the past decade as he has now gone on a solo path leaving the Mod influenced band The Goldenhour, two albums in the bag, Beyond The Beyond and Always In The Now, a few tracks from these albums have featured on Anything Goes.   Now with Neil’s eagerly anticipated debut album Geography & Luck coming out soon, he has been doing the rounds this summer with gig’s in Amsterdam, Glasgow South   Side Festival, Edinburgh College of  Art and Whistle Binkies, Glasgow West End Festival and culminating in Glasgow’s Merchant’s Festival. Neil’s new work has mostly been produced at home, whitest some has been produced by Raymond McGinley of Teenage  Fanclub notoriety at The Buzzwagon Studios.

Neil with Luke

With the DCR studio not knowing what to expect Neil kicked off with Bedhopper   and straight away a cool atmosphere was set, people milling in the background came to the fore to see what was going on, numerous messages started to come in from listener’s to find out who was playing and a new following was born without the first set being finished. Pick  track from the first set would have to be Likely Lads Theme/Ride The Tide, the later being  his last single. Finishing up with I Wish I’d Never, you just could not help but tap your feet  to these tunes. With a short break between set’s Neil chose two tracks from his influence’s  and not a bad choice either The Byrd’s – Just A Season and The Charlatans – Try Again  Today. So moving into the second set of the evening Neil now warmed up, treated us to a   blistering  paced set with an excellent Who medley and an alternative version of Always In The Now smoothly  incorporating The Rolling Stones – Play With Fire, which seemed as  though the two had always been part of the same song. With time catching up on us Neil ended the show with The Outdoor Type and just left us wanting more, judging by the response the listener’s wanted more.

PRIMAL SCREAM FOR  DUNOON GIG

PRIMAL SCREAM

As reported here on DCR by DJ Luke on Tuesday Primal Scream are to appear here in Dunoon at the Queens Hall on Saturday 16th June

Celebrating 30 years in the business this year, Bobby Gillespie and co. kick off their Summer with three Scottish shows in preparation for their dates at the Isle Of Wight Festival, the Hop Farm Music Festival and their support slot at the Stone Roses reunion show.

Bobby Gillespie and Co have come a long way together, from the ambient indie-rock sound of the Mercury Prize winning ‘Screamadelica’ to something far darker and more experimental with later albums ‘Exterminator’ and ‘Beautiful Future’. Forever movin’ on up, the band commemorated its 20th anniversary in 2010, performing the seminal ‘Screamadelica’ album live in its entirety.

Coming up after 10 on Anything Goes, American band Chelseaautomatic.

Hailing from Columbus Rock City, Chelsea Automatic plays a brand of modern garage rock that your parents don’t want you to listen to.

All in their early 20’s, twin brothers Jim and Alex took it upon themselves to recruit lifelong comrades Eric and J to form an association built on pure ambition. In just one year together, Chelsea Automatic has self-produced three radio quality EPs, been featured in every major publication in their home city, and taken their rock and roll circus throughout the Midwest and East Coast, including New York City, Nashville, Cleveland, Toronto, and Pittsburgh. Highlights of the band’s headstrong tenure include their CD release party at Columbus’s legendary Newport Music Hall, guest spots at SXSW, the Vans Warped Tour, M.E.A.N.Y. Fest in New York City, and the Millennium Music Conference, and upcoming appearances at the Florida Music Festival and LAUNCH Music Conference

  8. Flukeyboy says:

Go Go Bot from Glasgow will be the feature on Tuesday nights show.

Bursting onto the Scottish music scene with a strident mix of synth anthems with a pounding rock base and infectious pop melodies, GoGoBot have proven to be a refreshingly difficult band to pigeon hole.

Consisting of Marko Kelly (lead vocals and guitar), Rosie McClune (bass) and Gordon McNeil (drums), the band has developed a unique sound fuelled by their own eclectic taste and purpose.

To mark their arrival, GoGoBot will be releasing six singles over 2011 from the ‘See Saw Series’. The songs have been mixed by LA music producer Paul Lani (who has worked alongside David Bowie, Prince, Robbie Williams and U2 to name but a few). So as the band would say ‘do the right thing, take a chance and dance’ this is just a taste of things to come from the innovative threesome.

  15. Flukeyboy says:

A Bio for Day Of Days. Somethings in the pipeline, watch this space.

Day of Days are an all male four piece brought together by the uncomplicated, undeniable need to make powerful, uplifting and emotionally moving music. All hailing from Crieff and all attending the same secondry school, the group were all (and still are) very good friends. Not without it’s strong minded characters in the band though, there are of course sometimes differences. These differences though are the focal point to the bands strong song writing style with extreme swings between loud to quiet and even intimate arrangements.

Also no stranger to playing in front of large audiences such as a sold out King tuts, 1000’s @ Big in Falkirk, an electric Perth concert hall (with Young fathers) and hundreds of other packed gigs all over the UK including supporting legends ‘10cc’, Californian band ‘Delta Spirit’, ‘The Levellers’, We were promised jetpacks and ‘Stereo Mc’s’ to name but a few.
The end result though is the ever inspired, determined steely resolve of a band (even better a group of friends) who are determined to convert, one at a time if need be, as many music lovers as they can or risk their very sanity trying!!

Day of Days debut album ‘Indecency of the few’ was released on May 2nd 2011. It is available to download everywhere. Hard copies are available from the bands website. http://www.dayofdays.co.uk Their Scottish album tour takes place in May/June of 2011 with a tour of the uk currently in planning.

Born into this magical world 19 years ago, Tine sings, plays a bit of guitar and teaches herself some piano. Tine also writes some songs with plenty of oh-oh’s and ah-ah’s using these three instruments. I’ve had the pleasure of performing with some fantastic artists and at some amazing events, including supporting The Libertines and Pete Doherty for a special MTV show which led to me playing with Pete Doherty on his solo tour. I’ve played festivals such as Connect, and I’ve also supported Pearl & the Puppets (Universal Records), Chris Helme (of The Seahorses), Mark Morriss (of The Bluetones), Adam Ficek (Babyshambles) and many other influential people…….. Currently recording debut EP and always gigging.
