Azure Halo

ANYTHING GOES SPECIAL FROM JAMIE’S COAST COFFEE POP UP CAFE BAR AT DUNOON PIER WITH AZURE HALO

Azure Halo are a six piece Indie/Psychedelic band hailing from Glasgow, Scotland turned up in Dunoon on Sunday 14th August to
play at Jamie’s Coast Coffee Pop Up Cafe to close the Revival weekends entertainment. Like something from Height Ashbury, the band playing under a Gazebo next to the Pier in the street. The band are influenced by the 60′s psychedelic scene of West Coast America, maybe we are starting a West Coast Scene of Scotland. The links to the American Garage Scene don’t stop there. The band do a cover of The Electric Prunes Train For Tomorrow and The Electric Prunes reciprocated with their last single released “Left in The Blue” which was written by Azure Halo’s singer Rik. The sun was out and the band finely tuned after a hectic weekend of playing various venues across Scotland, they played a short but sweet set incorporating a few covers and some of their own tunes. The band sealed it for me when they ended their set with a blistering version of Count Five’s Psychotic Reaction. A great bunch of guy’s and gal, we managed to get the band to come down to the studio and do an interview for us, telling what they have been up to and what they are planning to do. In the bands own words they lay Seal Gate to rest and the band can now move onwards and upwards.

azure gazebo
Incorporated into the interview I will be playing tracks from Kula Shaker, Ghost Wave, The Electric Prunes, Chocolate Watchband, Night Beats, The U.F.O. Club, The Seeds, The Shadows Of Night, The Black Angels, The Spyrals, The Chemistry Set and All Them Witches.

Neil Sturgeon Plays With Fire.

Neil Sturgeon in the DCR Studio

Glasgow musician Neil Sturgeon came in

to the DCR studio on Cowal Games Friday to treat us to an acoustic set of new and old material. As part of The Anything Goes way of life there was no set plan, just go with the flow and flow it did. Neil’s been working  hard as a musician over the past decade as he has now gone on a solo path leaving the Mod influenced band The Goldenhour, two albums in the bag, Beyond The Beyond and Always In The Now, a few tracks from these albums have featured on Anything Goes.   Now with Neil’s eagerly anticipated debut album Geography & Luck coming out soon, he has been doing the rounds this summer with gig’s in Amsterdam, Glasgow South   Side Festival, Edinburgh College of  Art and Whistle Binkies, Glasgow West End Festival and culminating in Glasgow’s Merchant’s Festival. Neil’s new work has mostly been produced at home, whitest some has been produced by Raymond McGinley of Teenage  Fanclub notoriety at The Buzzwagon Studios.

Neil with Luke

With the DCR studio not knowing what to expect Neil kicked off with Bedhopper   and straight away a cool atmosphere was set, people milling in the background came to the fore to see what was going on, numerous messages started to come in from listener’s to find out who was playing and a new following was born without the first set being finished. Pick  track from the first set would have to be Likely Lads Theme/Ride The Tide, the later being  his last single. Finishing up with I Wish I’d Never, you just could not help but tap your feet  to these tunes. With a short break between set’s Neil chose two tracks from his influence’s  and not a bad choice either The Byrd’s – Just A Season and The Charlatans – Try Again  Today. So moving into the second set of the evening Neil now warmed up, treated us to a   blistering  paced set with an excellent Who medley and an alternative version of Always In The Now smoothly  incorporating The Rolling Stones – Play With Fire, which seemed as  though the two had always been part of the same song. With time catching up on us Neil ended the show with The Outdoor Type and just left us wanting more, judging by the response the listener’s wanted more.

PRIMAL SCREAM FOR  DUNOON GIG

PRIMAL SCREAM

As reported here on DCR by DJ Luke on Tuesday Primal Scream are to appear here in Dunoon at the Queens Hall on Saturday 16th June

Celebrating 30 years in the business this year, Bobby Gillespie and co. kick off their Summer with three Scottish shows in preparation for their dates at the Isle Of Wight Festival, the Hop Farm Music Festival and their support slot at the Stone Roses reunion show.

Bobby Gillespie and Co have come a long way together, from the ambient indie-rock sound of the Mercury Prize winning ‘Screamadelica’ to something far darker and more experimental with later albums ‘Exterminator’ and ‘Beautiful Future’. Forever movin’ on up, the band commemorated its 20th anniversary in 2010, performing the seminal ‘Screamadelica’ album live in its entirety.

  1. Anything Goes Featuring The Debut Album From The Black Pitts

The highly anticipated debut album from Dublin’s garage punk supremos, ‘The Black Pitts’ has arrived.’B Movie Extra’ has shades of the New York Dolls on a night out with the Ramones on their way to a Stooges gig.
It’s easy to see why these guys blew the roof off ‘Rebellion’, the UK’s longest running punk festival in 2016, and were immediately confirmed for a return in 2017.
‘B Movie Extra’ is crammed full of characters, punk attitude, slapstick vocals, catchy chorus’s, life lessons and horror stories. The band were proud to launch their album, supporting ‘Richie Ramone’ on the Dublin leg of His World Tour to end off 2016.
The story of ‘The Black Pitts’ and ‘B Movie Extra’ goes back a long way, with founding member Ive playing kick ass rock n’ roll straight out of school, forming his first band ‘The Dreads’, he later went on to global notoriety producing under the name ‘Ridgewalkers’.
Ado hooked up with the band after years of successful underground club DJing and producing in London. With Tony dragged screaming and kicking from some past incarnation, they formed the Pitts, a nailed to the floor three piece, with Ive on lead vocals and guitar, Ado on vocals and bass and Tony effortlessly supplying those killer beats
Taking some old Dreads songs as a framework and Ives’ later studio production experience, they slammed them together to produce a modern slice of punk’s history. This is not about fashion, it’s about invoking the spirit of a genre of music which changed the music world we live in, leading to 70’s punk, 90’s alternative and even the power pop of today, its influences will long reign on!
‘B Movie Extra’ is a classic in the making, nostalgia for an age yet to come!
Now available on CD from FOAD Musick/Advance Records
    Or Download from Bandcamp.

Also on tonight’s show we’ll have “It Was 50 Years Ago Today”,20 Years ago this blur and James had releases. What am I going to play? 2. Anything Goes Featuring Neil Sturgeon

One of the very first Featured Artists on Anything Goes DCR back in the early days, Neil came down to the Station and gave a great solo acoustic set. Since then Neil has been on a personnel journey to record and release his solo album. The album now recorded and packed and ready for release later this year, here is the third single from from the yet released album, NY Reflection Song, four tracks on the e.p and Neil showing his range of influences, influences from the like of Gene Clark, Elliot Smith, Mike Nesmith, Arthur Lee to name a few. It’s what you would call a proper single, all the tracks are produced by Neil except one which Teenage Fanclub’s Raymond McGinley produced. The album has taken a long time in the making and from the three releases so far we are in for a treat when the album is finally released.
Also on tonight’s show I’ll be playing tracks from Pacific Trash Vortex, Ivory Wave, Elephant Stone, R.L. Burnside, The Spyrals and Azure Halo and the new slot It Was 50 Years Ago Today.

  5. Anything Goes Special The British Psychedelic Sounds of 1967

Yes, I managed sneak one of the box sets in to my Christmas shopping. Let’s Go Down and Blow Our Minds is a new compilation box set from the Grapefruit label. Straight away this album is a 10 out of 10 and a must for anyone in to British Freakbeat, R’n'B and Psychedelia. The British Psychedelic Sounds of 1967 clocks in around 4 hours, a 3 cd box set. A journey of the British Youth Movement changing from either straight blues or R’n'B to psychedelia. This is the British equivalent to the America Nuggets series. 80 tracks of mostly unknown bands with well known musicians, Notably David Bowie, Dave Davies, members from Deep Purple and The Rolling Stones and some legendary Freakbeat bands like The Attack, The Sorrows, John’s Children. A couple of covers appear on the album and one I never knew existed, Those Fading Colours doing cover of Electric Prune’s Try Me On For Size. 1967 was a key moment in British music with albums such as The Piper At The Gates of Dawn, Sgt. Pepper’s, Day’s Of Future Past and The Who’.s The Who Sell Out, the latter album linking to a track on tonight’s show that gave them the idea the record the mini ads on the album. This box set gives you and insight into the influences of the music scene at this moment, strangely there is not much influence from the States, most bands seem to be influenced by The Who and The Kinks.

  7. Anything Goes Featuring Thee Oh Sees An Odd Entrances

Yes, Thee Oh Sees are back with their second album of the year. Earlier this year I featured A Weird Exit. I thought at the time it was a strange album as the previous releases have had a mix of electronics and garage punk, well this is part 2 of what you could call a double album. Here is the more relaxed mellow sounds of Thee Oh Sees. This album has a German Spacerock sound to it, it’s almost like the two albums are one concept album. Another good offering from Thee Oh Sees.
Also on tonight’s show I will be playing tracks from Primal Scream, Pixies, this weeks 12”er is Robert Calvert and The Mothers, Spring King, Night Beats, The Sheepdogs, The UFO Club.

Also one for the Inspiral Carpets, dedicated to Craig Gill, drummer of the band who sadly passed away today. RIP A true inspiration.

  8. Anything Goes DCR Featuring The Wytches All Your Happy Life

The Wytches are back with their second album All Your Happy Life. The four piece garage band first hit us with their excellent debut album Annabel Dream Reader a hard edge garage punk album. This new release is much on the same lines as the first album, hard edge garage with are more harmonious side. The second album still has the influence of classic horror in it’s sounds and lyrics.
A soundtrack to Hammer House, grinding guitars and thumping drum beats and Screaming Lord Sutch like vocals. Definitely a good album to listen to on a dark winters night.

Also on tonight’s show, a new single from Cast, one from the remastered Oasis album, The Spitfires, The Strypes, Miracle Glass Company, Spring King, The Beat Movement and more.

  9. Anything Goes Featuring Pixies Head Carrier Album

Pixies formed in 1986 in Boston, Massachusetts. The original line-up comprised Black Francis (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Joey Santiago (lead guitar), Kim Deal (bass, backing vocals) and (drums). The band disbanded acrimoniously in 1993, but reunited in 2004. Deal left in 2013 and was replaced briefly by Kim Shattuck before Paz Lenchantin joined for the band’s 2014 tour, and has remained in the line-up since. Back with their second album and sixth in total since they reformed. One of the leaders in the late 80′s early 90′s alternative scene and influencing a host of British bands during that period. Their new album Head Carrier is a fine album filled with jangling pop guitars and distortion. Black Francis still has his distinctive vocal tones, the one downside to the new Pixies, is no Kim Deal. Head Carrier sounds just like the Pixies.
Also on tonight’s show the 12” incher is back with The Nice and John Mayall, as it’s Election Day in the US I thought I would put together an Election Themed show, playing tracks from Goat, Acetone, MC5, Night Beats, The White Stripes and a new one from Cast.

  10. Anything Goes Featuring The Brew Shake The Tree Album

The-Brew is a British rock band consisting of Tim Smith (bass), Kurtis Smith (drums) and Jason Barwick (guitar, vocals). They were voted “best band” 2006/7 by “It’s Only Rock & Roll” magazine.

In early July 2007, The Brew headlined the Maasboulevard Festival in Schiedam, the Netherlands and were invited back to perform in 2008.
In 2006, The Brew were a success at The Rock ‘n’ Blues Custom Show at Pentrich,Derbyshire, they were asked to do a second gig by the organisers on the following day on the Centre Stage, and they were then booked to return in 2007. In August that year The Brew performed on The British Stage at the UK’s biggest R’n’B festival in Colne, Lancashire. In 2008 they headlined the festival on the Sunday, on the British stage. The Brew completed a set for the national Belgium radio station, Classical 21 and were filmed by the national television France 2, for their performance at that year’s Festival in France, Le Blues Autour Du Zinc. They have performed at the National Classic 21 Radio Station, RTBF Showcase Festival in Brussels. In 2009, The Brew received national recognition throughout Germany when their performance at Rockpalast Festival was broadcast across the country and beyond, on WDR TV and they performed again on Rockpalast in 2012. The Brew are on DCR with their 6th Studio album Shake The Tree released earlier this autumn.
Also on tonight’s show giving it some Halloween vibes, The Charlatans, Allah-Las, Kula Shaker, Holy Wave, Night Beats, Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins

  11. Anything Goes Featuring Goat Requiem

Swedish band Goat are back with their 4th album, currently touring and just played in Glasgow last week. Goat known for their heavy guitar sounds mixed with world music have a more mellower folky sound on this album, lots of mandolins and flutes. Anyone would think that the guitarist was on holiday when this album was recorded as he doesn’t seem to feature much and makes his first appearance on about the 4th track. Out of all the albums this for me is their best, a well produced sound and a good layout of tracks that gives the album a nice flow and feel. Another good album to to the list of albums that have been released this year.

Also on tonight’s show I will be playing tracks from Tapestry, who I have just learnt have split, a couple of tracks from Thousand Yard Stares new sessions album, Miracle Glass Company, Elephant Stone, Ghost Wave, Night Beats, Allah-Las and more.

  13. Anything Goes Featuring Miracle Glass Company

Having established themselves as one of the most exciting live bands on the Scottish music scene in 2016 (Nominated for Best Live Act at SAMA Awards 2016, ‘The best gig I’ve seen in years’ Vic Galloway on their XpoNorth showcase) MIRACLE GLASS COMPANY are set to top it off with the release of their Owen Morris produced debut album ‘MGC 1’ on VoxBox Records (vinyl/CD/digital).
Comprising WILLIAM DOUGLAS (vocals / bass), ANDY DUNCAN (vocals / drums) and AUSTEN GEORGE (vocals / guitar) the band push the boundaries of what a 3-piece can achieve, all writing songs, taking turns on lead vocals and creating a wall of sound with their incredible musicianship and 3-part harmonies.
When it came to recording the album the band followed their 70’s rock’n’roll influences by recording the music for the album live to 8-track tape in just 4 days, before repeating the feat for the vocals, singing all of the lead vocals and harmonies live together in one room. With legendary producer Owen Morris (Oasis, The Verve, The View) at the helm, the outcome is fresh, direct and effortlessly mixes stunning musicianship and raw power with pop hooks galore.
Proclaiming that the band have ‘created something timeless’, Scottish music guru Jim Gellatly has already described the album as ‘a future classic’. The band will release T.R.O.U.B.L.E. as a single alongside the album and judging by the response to their triple single release earlier in the year of Higher Than High (3rd May – ‘a psychedelic sun drenched beauty’ Netsounds), Big Beat (3rd June – ‘ridiculously catchy’ Vic Galloway), and The Hidden Light ( 3rd July – ‘swaggering, direct and pleasingly heads-down’ The List) the future looks very bright for the Edinburgh trio.

    Current Album Tour Dates:
Oct 14 Cabaret Voltaire (Album Launch night) Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Oct 15 The Tooth and Claw Inverness, United Kingdom
Oct 19 Notting Hill Arts Club London, United Kingdom

  14. Anything Goes Featuring Elephant Stone Ship Of Fools

Candian Indie band come with a new album, Ship Of Fools, less psych and sitars and more drum beats and synth sounds. The 4th album has an 80′s/90′s indie dance sound mixed with sitars. The album has some nice stand out tracks but no long sitar psych wig out track, instead Elephant Stone have opted for a 5 minute electronic tracks much like Electric Eye. The albums electronic indie dance style has elements of Happy Mondays, New Order, Electric Eye and Les Big Byrd. My pick track from the album would be Run, Sister Run, nice Beatlesque drum beat with tabla’s and sitars. Not one of Elephant Stone’s better albums, it’s does still have have good tracks on it.

Also on tonight’s show tracks from Allah-Las, Psychic Ills, a new one Peter Doherty, also a new ones from The Hollows, The Miracle Glass Company and Temples, The Verve, The Vryll Society and more.

  16. Anything Goes Featuring The Spitfires A Thousand Times

The sound of the suburbs is alive in Watford. The Spitfires are back with their second album A Thousand Times, more angry young sounds in much the mould of the first album. A Thousand Times, released in the last week of August, slightly late with the feature, which has given me time to play the album inside out. It’s hard not to like The Spitfires, yes it’s The Jam and yes, Paul Weller, throw in a little bit of The Who, they do it so well though. Now add in keyboards and you have a band forming it’s own sound. This is a great follow up album and the band stamp who they are on this one. Too many pick track however I would give Day To Day and On My Mind. This band knows how to write a good tune, this band would go down a storm at Mod Weekenders.
Also on tonight’s show I will be playing tracks from The Charlatans, a new one from Elephant Stone, The Moons, Primal Scream, a couple of tracks for Banksy.

  17. Anything Goes Featuring Thee Oh Sees New Album A Weird Exists

San Francisco band Thee Oh Sees are back with another offering of electronic, psych, punk. This is not the first time Thee Oh Sees have featured on Anything Goes, last year I featured their ever so good album Mutilator Defeated At Last, this time it’s A Weird Exist which lays somewhere between Can, Faust and Loop meets The Damned, Stooges and MC5. 2016 is definitely a year for good albums, this one no different. High octane guitar punk, spacerock taking the progression of psychedelia to the next level, only 8 tracks on the album but they are lengthy. The band are on a European tour at the moment with 3 gig’s in the UK, sadly Glasgow not one of them. A Weird Exists is another contender for Album of The Year.
No Vinyl Collection tonight, the weeks have been busy. I will be playing tracks from Azure Halo, Psychic Ills, The Coral, The Kingdom Of The Holy Sun, The Goldenhour, Psychic Lemon and more.

  18. Anything Goes Special With Azure Halo Interview

Azure Halo are a six piece Indie/Psychedelic band hailing from Glasgow, Scotland turned up in Dunoon on Sunday to
play at Jamie’s Coast Coffee Pop Up Cafe to close the weekends entertainment.

  19. Anything Goes Featuring Ghost Wave

From Auckland, New Zealand, Ghost Wave

“The Ghost Wave sound finds itself somewhere between the Flying Nun bands of the 80s, the British explosion of the 1960s and the wayfaring dubs of Lee “Scratch” Perry…”
Earlier Ghost Wave released Radio Norfolk, a band and album that at the time passed me by. Somehow recently I came across Radio Norfolk album, a blend of very British 80′s/90′s indie dance beast and garage psych guitars played at 33 instead of 45, a really chilled out album that sounds like the Happy Mondays slowed down, Primal Scream basslines and psych sounds of Pink Floyd. Lovely haunting harmonies. This is a great find, probably the best album I’ve heard this year and their have been some good albums, tonight I will be playing tracks from the Radio Norfolk album.
Also, From The 12” Collection PJ Harvey and Thousand Yard Stare, Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller, Spring King, Primal Scream, Dogtooth, The Beat Movement and The S.R.B. Band

  20. Anything Goes Featuring The Judge

Formed in 2010 in St. Louis, MO, The Judge. This band caught my eye a few weeks ago when I saw an ad for an upcoming rock album from a band called The Judge, knowing nothing about them I checked them out, I thought the name sounded cool. I found The Judge doing a version of Cream’s Sunshine Of Your Love. The band has an interesting sound, it’s defiantly 70′s rock, lots of heavy bass and guitar wig outs. The Singer has similar sound to Free and the music is Free, Sabbath and Uriah Heap. There’s lot’s of Retro sounds at the moment, this stands out as different. Clearly retro and real cool. Tonight I’m going to play tracks from their Demo e.p whilst eagerly waiting for a copy of the album.
Also on tonight’s show I’ll be playing tracks from The 12 Inch Collection tracks from Ozric Tentacles and Loop, Black Mountain, The Who, The Hollows, All Them Witches and The Doors plus more.

  21. Anything Goes Featuring The Hollows

The Hollows are a Mod inspired rock n’ roll band from Glasgow. The Hollows, are returning on the scene, after a year sweating it out in their new studio. Taking a year to complete their sound with Wull and Andy recording and producing the new material. Wull (Singer), Gregor (Vocals/Guitar), Stevie (Bass) along with new members Andy (keyboard) and Gary (Drums) have came back with their 60’s/70’s Mod inspired Rock and Roll. Bigger and better! In the past, the band have shared stages with the likes of Beady Eye, Ocean Colour Scene, The Serpent Power, John Power (Cast and La’s) and The Moons to name but a few. Influenced by The Who, Dr Feelgood, The Jam, The Coral, Cream, Peter Green, The Clash, The Beatles.
Also on tonight’s show I will be playing tracks from Miracle Glass Company, from the Vinyl collection The Charlatans and Happy Mondays, Paul Weller, The Stone Roses, The Beat Movement, Dogtooth, The Spitfires, Spring King and more.

  22. Anything Goes Featuring Fuzz

Fuzz is Ty Segall (drums/vocals), Charlie Moothart (guitar/vocals), and Chad Ubovich (bass). Theyíre heavy-rock lifers ñ three California-bred dudes who have been refining their riffs and getting weird together since high school which wasn’t that long ago, actually). Fuzz was formed in/around 2011 as a collaboration between Segall and Moothart, but its only within the last year that the pair had sufficient time to guide the band out of side-project limbo and into a recording studio. Since then, they have released two singles, “This Time I Got a Reason” (Trouble In Mind) and “Sleigh Ride” (In the Red). Around the time of the second single, Cosio joined on bass. They are not dabblers or dilettantes. Fuzz have flipped through used bins, hard drives, and record collections of the world, seeking out the finest weirdo cuts. The bandís self-titled debut LP, which was recorded by Chris Woodhouse (Thee Oh Sees, The Intelligence), dives deep, drawing inspiration from the more esoteric reaches of heavy metal pre-history. There are Sabbath and Hendrix nods, obviously, but on “Sleigh Bells” you might also catch a whiff of UK progressive blues business like The Groundhogs, particularly when the song quits its 10/4-time intro and reboots into full bore choogle.

Also on tonight’s show tracks from Azure Halo, Drakkar Nowhere, The Hollows, The Miracle Glass Company, The Stone Roses, Kular Shaker and more.

  23. Anything Goes Featuring Psychic Ills Inner Journey Out

This weeks Featured Artist are a 2 piece from New York in the form of Psychic Ills, from the first time the needle hit the groove on track one I thought this is the perfect Sunday chill out album. The band have been going since 2003 and have had various line ups. Inner Journey Out is the bands 5th album. I first came across them when they did a track for A Tribute To The Doors album, covering Love Me Two Times, one of the better tracks on the album. Inner Journey Out laid back swamp acoustic tracks have the sounds of bands like Buffalo Springfield and The Kinks, genres of influence, country, blues, gospel, and jazz lead to a 9 minute jazz infused Rah Wah-Wah. friends and guests also provide pedal steel guitar, horns, strings, and backing vocals for what has to be one of the best albums I’ve heard this year, I seem to be saying that a lot lately, that’s not a bad thing. Everything has been done before, to be new you have to find ways of making old sounds sound new. Psychic Ills definitely do that.
Also on tonight’s show I’ll be playing tracks from Night Beats, Allah-Las, Serpent Power, Blossoms, The Vryll Society and The Stone Roses

  24. Anything Goes Featuring Spring King, The Debut Album Tell Me If You Like To

With this week being the home gigs of The Stone Roses I thought I add a bit of Manchester to the show this week, the Featured Artist this week are tipped as one of the bands for the Summer 2016 and come from Manchester. “a small-scale, art-pop-punk project” ,They began as a solo project in 2012 of songwriter and producer Tarek Musa, who also sings and plays drums. Manchester always has a knack of finding creative sounds that are specific to bands. Spring King are fused with New Wave and Punk, having a little bit of the vibe of Joy Division, New Order and The Damned. The tracks are short and frantic with burst of American Garage allah MC5 or surf Ramones. This is a great debut album and could even be added to the catalogue of iconic Manchester albums. No doubt we will be hearing more from this band, expect to see them in Best New Band category.
Yes, I’ll be playing that Stone Roses track along with The Strypes, The Coral, The Chemistry Set, Psychic Lemon, Joy Division, Holy Wave and The Night Beats.

  25. Anything Goes Featuring Richard Ashcroft These People

After a 10 year heitest in his solo career and 6 years since he last released an album, Richard Ashcroft is back with his latest album These People. Through his time Richard Ashcroft has been held as one of the best song writer’s and one of the best singers Britain has produced. Former frontman of The Verve and conquering the world with their Album Urban Hymns, an album that caused controversy at the time with the single Bitter Sweet Symphony, said to be a rip off of The Rolling Stones This Could Be The Last Time, not many people picking it up as it was a rare brass version. Not a rip off but a finished symphony. Before Urban Hymns Richard Ashcroft announced the band wanted to make the best album ever and a Rolling Stones like album. From that point on Richard Ashcroft went into an up and down solo career, briefly reforming The Verve for The Forth album. Ashcroft’s solo career never really took off, his first album Alone With Everybody reaching no 1 in the UK and 127 in the US charts. His standout album Human Conditions reaching no 3 in the UK and not charting in the US. The latest offering is very Jackal and Hyde, there are some real quality tracks mixed with some really poor pop songs, topping no3 in the UK, this due more to the name of Richard Ashcroft than the quality of the album. The singles are the weakest tracks. However the standout tracks sound like Verve . Reviewing the album I would give it 5 out of 10 ten for being half decent, download the tracks you like rather than the whole album. It’s a proper Marmite album.

Also on tonight’s show I’ll be playing tracks from Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher, Ivory Wave, The Vryll Society, The Seahorses, that Weller/Gallagher Monkees track, The Stone Roses and more.

The Beat Movement with their high work ethic fresh from Italy went down to Liverpool last week and played The Cavern Club. The latest e.p is another up tempo Mod Indie offering with 5 tracks, still waiting for the album guy’s.
Also on tonight’s show I’ll be playing tracks from Black Mountain, Fuzz, The Black Angels, Kingdom Of The Holy Sun, The Beach Boys, Bob Dylan and more.

  27. Anything Goes Featuring Kingdom of the Holy Sun At the Gates of Dawn

Not for the first time do we see Kingdom of the Holy Sun as Featured Artist. This is the second time featured on the show. The Seattle Psych band feature on this weeks show with tracks from their upcoming album At The Gates Of Dawn. The bands latest offering is pure Club A Go Go beat influenced by bands like The Doors, The Seeds, 13th Floor Elevators and Electric Prunes. This album is up their with recent neo psych bands also coming out of America like The Spyrals, Night Beats and Black Angels. The band have gone in a different direction since their earlier releases. At The Gates Of Dawn is a nice upbeat garage album, the band use the full array of sounds and effects available to them, nice fuzzy tones, wha-wha and jangling guitars, lovely harmonies in the Byrd’s style with swirling electric piano riff’s accompanied by some solid beat drumming. At the Gates of Dawn is another quality psych album coming out of the ever blossoming scene.

  28. Anything Goes Featuring Psychic Lemon

A change in tonight’s program. Psychic Lemon are a Psychedelic band hailing from the home town of Syd Barrett. There music spans the full length of psychedelia, Prog Rock, Space Rock to Krautrock. Only just coming in I haven’t had time to fully take in the quality of this band. Here’s what the band say about themselves. On hearing Death Cult Blues track I thought of Focus. Psychic Lemon is an exceptionally good debut album.

Psychic Lemon rehearse and record in a studio in the back of a small garden.
The band got together at the end of 2013, everyone looking for a new musical challenge – to write and play the music they want to play, and not be held back by the expectations of others. However, if other people like it too, then that’s great: The band’s goal is to entertain without compromise.
No one likes to be pigeon-holed, but the music can loosely be described as psychedelic or krautrock. The band’s influences are broad, but favourite bands include The Heads and Amon Düül II. As of December 2015, Psychic Lemon are finishing off their debut album, which will be out in March.

Also on tonight’s show I will be playing tracks from Azure Halo, All Them Witches, Ivory Wave, Terry Reid, a Turkish psych track and more.

  30. Anything Goes Featuring Holy Wave Freaks of Nature
Holy Wave are back with their 2nd album and don’t disappoint. Back in 2014 Holy Wave released their critically acclaimed album Relax, now the band are back with Freaks of Nature. The last album was a surf driven garage album and this album has a more mellower side to it, if that’s possible. The band come from the hot bed of the current American music scene, Austin. Yes it’s a Psych album with obvious American influences, it also seems to have influences from the British indie scene of the early 90′s. Since receiving this album it’s been on play none stop, it has all the hallmarks of a classic album and warrants being put on repeat. The bands sound on this album has the harmonies of 70′s Americana, with the occasional sounds of fuzzy psych guitar sounds mixed with sounds of British Shoegazing and New Wave. I’m not sure if this is by design or by default. If you walked in on this album you may be mistaken for a lost album of someone like Teenage Fanclub, Slowdive, Chapterhouse. A slither of Bernard Sumner or Johnny Marr floats through the album. The album doesn’t have any weak tracks and is well laid out, with top production. To me the main sound of this album is Velvet Underground mixed with 90′s Shoegazing, a genre of music I didn’t think travelled across the pond. An example of this is found on the track Air Wolf a blistering soundscape of British Shoegazing. The American music scene keeps producing high end albums and Freak Of Nature is another to add to the list. If your hoping to see these in Glasgow your too late, they played Nice N Sleezy last month.
Also on tonight’s show I will be playing tracks from Golden Animals, The Libertines, The Little Flames, Dogtooth band, The Seahorses, Night Beats, Kingdom of the Holy Sun and more.

  31. Anything Goes Featuring Night Beats Who Sold My Generation

Tonight’s show sees the Night Beats back with their third album, Who Sold My Generation. The Night Beats sound incorporates early R&B, Psychedelic Rock, Blues, Folk and Soul. It’s one of the best guitar albums you’ll hear this year. The first track to be released was the politically charged ‘No Cops’, which refers to the deaths at the hands of the police force in the US. It’s refreshing to hear a band stand up and say something about injustice in an era of increasing docility. The sound of ‘Who Sold My Generation’ owes a lot to Robert Levon Been of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, who perfected the two-inch-tape authenticity at his analogue recording studio in Los Angeles. The band tracked everything live and have crafted an exhilarating, hedonistic modern psych album that means the album doesn’t just pay homage to a lot of the great influences mentioned, but sounds just as good.

Also on tonight’s show tracks from B.R.M.C, The Spyrals, The Coral, The Little Flames and more.

  32. Anything Goes Featuring Primal Scream Chaosmosis

Primal Scream are back with their 11th studio album. ‘Chaosmosis’ reference to French psychotherapist Felix Guattari. His 1992 book of the same name argues human subjectivity is shaped by phenomena outside the “faculties of the soul”, specifically language, mass media and technology. In 2013 Primal Scream went back to dance Psychedelia with More Light, one of the best albums Primal Scream albums to date. In 2016 Primal Scream give us the dance electronica side of the band. Chaosmosis, not as good as More Light, but a worthy follow on. Lot’s of influence or heard in this album. Happy Mondays, New Order even a short burst of the Prodigy. There seems to be a lot of varying opinion on this album good or band. For me I would have to rate this 5/10. There are some really good tracks and some very average tracks.

On tonight’s show I will be playing a Record Store Day release from the Tom Hingley Band, some new tracks from The Active Listener’s new sampler and their British Psychedelia sampler, an awesome live track from All Them Witches and a back to from my recent purchases whilst why-ling away my time in Glasgow record shops.

This weeks featured artist is not so much a new band but a bootleg album unofficially released in 2007 and finally released this week on the Deltasonic Label. The Little Flames formed in 2004 and feature Miles Kane on guitar. The bands sound is influenced by the 1960′s and punk. Miles Kane going on to form The Last Shadow Puppets with Arctic Monkey’s Alex Turner and then releasing two solo albums. Also on tonight’s show we will have tracks from The Wytches, The Tapestry, a new one from The Spitfires and more.
