Anything Goes (If It’s Good), Bridging the gap between old and new alternative music of all ages. Lost classics to modern gems. 10 til midnight Tuesday’s, Want to hear a tune, drop us a text 07751236995 or e-mail us at mail@dunooncommunityradio.org . Anything Goes – The Only Real Alternative.
Neil Sturgeon Plays With Fire.
Glasgow musician Neil Sturgeon came in
to the DCR studio on Cowal Games Friday to treat us to an acoustic set of new and old material. As part of The Anything Goes way of life there was no set plan, just go with the flow and flow it did. Neil’s been working hard as a musician over the past decade as he has now gone on a solo path leaving the Mod influenced band The Goldenhour, two albums in the bag, Beyond The Beyond and Always In The Now, a few tracks from these albums have featured on Anything Goes. Now with Neil’s eagerly anticipated debut album Geography & Luck coming out soon, he has been doing the rounds this summer with gig’s in Amsterdam, Glasgow South Side Festival, Edinburgh College of Art and Whistle Binkies, Glasgow West End Festival and culminating in Glasgow’s Merchant’s Festival. Neil’s new work has mostly been produced at home, whitest some has been produced by Raymond McGinley of Teenage Fanclub notoriety at The Buzzwagon Studios.
With the DCR studio not knowing what to expect Neil kicked off with Bedhopper and straight away a cool atmosphere was set, people milling in the background came to the fore to see what was going on, numerous messages started to come in from listener’s to find out who was playing and a new following was born without the first set being finished. Pick track from the first set would have to be Likely Lads Theme/Ride The Tide, the later being his last single. Finishing up with I Wish I’d Never, you just could not help but tap your feet to these tunes. With a short break between set’s Neil chose two tracks from his influence’s and not a bad choice either The Byrd’s – Just A Season and The Charlatans – Try Again Today. So moving into the second set of the evening Neil now warmed up, treated us to a blistering paced set with an excellent Who medley and an alternative version of Always In The Now smoothly incorporating The Rolling Stones – Play With Fire, which seemed as though the two had always been part of the same song. With time catching up on us Neil ended the show with The Outdoor Type and just left us wanting more, judging by the response the listener’s wanted more.

As reported here on DCR by DJ Luke on Tuesday Primal Scream are to appear here in Dunoon at the Queens Hall on Saturday 16th June
Celebrating 30 years in the business this year, Bobby Gillespie and co. kick off their Summer with three Scottish shows in preparation for their dates at the Isle Of Wight Festival, the Hop Farm Music Festival and their support slot at the Stone Roses reunion show.
Bobby Gillespie and Co have come a long way together, from the ambient indie-rock sound of the Mercury Prize winning ‘Screamadelica’ to something far darker and more experimental with later albums ‘Exterminator’ and ‘Beautiful Future’. Anything Goes will be featuring Funk Groove Rock band Rough Twist, who hail from Macclesfield. To me they seem to be influenced by the likes of King Crimson, Chicago, Coleseum and a touch of Flea like bass playing. I will also be playing a track from Gaz Coombes (Supergrass) new album as well as a new track from Dumbarton’s The Vibe and Greenock’s The Purple Doves.
Rough Twist
Rough Twist are a 6 piece heavy groove rock band from Macclesfield. Formed in 2008, the band made their first public appearance in May 2009 and have been gigging regularly since in venues across the North West, creating a large local fan base. By fusing riff heavy rock and roll with funk grooves and the inclusion of both tenor and alto sax, Rough Twist have created a sound which is original, interesting and which has attracted a large cross section of fans.
Tom Scragg – Alto Saxophone
Ben Ward – Tenor Saxophone/Flute
Dewi Chappell -Lead Guitar

Artist’s Wanted To Help Sound Students
Reese has done her homework, thanks for coming in last week and tellings us about your College course in Music. We found out that part of the course entails recording artist’s. I asked how artist’s get involved, not sure Reese was tasked to find out.
Remember, if you take part you will get a proffesional demo/album at the end of the three day ordeal. Artist must be available for the full three days, it is really worth it.

Anything Goes will be featuring Paisley band Dirtyface
Dirtyface is one word. Not Dirty Face, DirtyFace or Dirty Faces. It’s just Dirtyface.
Formed in late 2010, Dirtyface are an indie tour de force from Paisley, Scotland whose relentless, raucous rhymes and riffs are matched only by their incessant, combustible beats.
Taking inspiration from everything and nothing, the sound fits seamlessly with their demeanour, putting the boys firmly in the ‘must-see’ category – no matter your musical disposition.

The Beat Movement
The Beat Movement (formerly The Movement UK)………..
Have a head strong attitude and a motivation built on delivering a new blend of power pop, indie, mod-rock, they are a band with direction and focus and are what can only be described as a proper guitar driven Rhythm & Blues band who build on the influences of many, many bands, ranging from the great London bands from the 60’s (the who, small faces, the kinks etc) and infusing those influences with the greatest britpop and indie bands of the modern music era…including the likes of the jam, roses, OCS, and the faces,to name but a few. But this band stand head & shoulders above other bands for their blend is unique, they are a band sparked by melodies and lyrics. Each chord each word has a meaning….

“The Merrylees’ engaging blend of country & western and hallucinogenic riffery follows a fine heritage of 60s and 70s influences. The songs are fleet-footed affairs, all skiffling percussion and deftly handled melodies. The Merrylees might have a record worth watching out for if their Facebook snippets are anything to go by” – Edinburgh Evening News

Tuesday show will feature Themselves from Leicester.
Themselves are a 4 Piece.
Hailing from the Midlands, and bringing with them a suitcase filled with riffs and a rucksack of ryhthm section.
After a couple of years of life in a band, it seems to have become time to get off their collective arses and actually tell some people that they exist. After playing live more this year, they’ve been encouraged by the turn outs and comments offered at gigs. You may well see/hear more of Themselves this coming year. We’ve put our boots on, and we’re coming to splash in some puddles.Everyone’s life has a soundtrack, we just happen to write most of ours.
“Beyond This Point” coming soon.
Christmas is just around the corner, so on tonight’s show I will be playing a few tracks from Born Stiff – The Stiff Records Collection. Ideal for the Christmas stocking filler. Not forgetting also on tonight’s show from Manchester, The Rainband, who are currently supporting Ocean Colour Scene on there Mosley Shoals Tour.
The Rainband
The Rainband formed in December 2009 when lead singer Martin Finnigan commenced writing with long time friend & former Monaco (Peter Hook) guitarist Phil Rainey. The band were then joined by Steve Irlam (drums) & Paul Daggatt (bass). Their line up complete, the band have fast tracked to prominence in the Manchester scene.
Through 2010, they established themselves as one of Manchester finest emerging talents playing support slots to the likes out the Fall, Badly Drawn boy & Simple Minds in some seminal venues across the country.
The bands debut download track “Broken Youth”, based on a Manchester author’s book of the same name, introduced them to their now established fan base & the track is in line to now be used in the film of the book which is to be made this year.

Only a few more featured Artist coming up as we head into winter an get ready for some Christmas Specials, tonight from Gateshead The Soviets.
The Soviets are a 5-piece Indie/Rock band from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, UK, with influences ranging from the Stone Roses to Orbital, via Kings of Leon. The band fuse rock & roll, Indie-pop, Trance, and House to create a distinctive and unique sound, which is supported by a deeply ingrained love of music and a talent for presenting extraordinary live performances.
The family duo at the forefront of this tour-de-force have gained a thorough experience of live performance gigging as “Known World” on the songwriter’s acoustic circuit for a number of years, and have built up a loyal fan base.
From Edinburgh, The Jackals.
Out of the gloomy mist of a worn UK music scene, come The Jackals to supply a soundtrack of music and energy in a period of time where original music is neglected for the commercialised feast of pop televised fodder. Mixing guitar driven psychedelic sounds with gritty well crafted songs, The Jackals are a band not to be missed in the current climate.
Creating attitude through sheer force of personality, The Jackals don’t sound like someONE, they sound like someTHING – the spirit of rock ’n’ roll freedom. This Edinburgh band even have the audacity to enjoy themselves, translating through their audience. If crowd reactions are anything to go by, they have a bright future ahead. Currently recording their debut album to be released later this year, The Jackals play quality live music with attitude & conviction that can only be translated on view. With influences drawn from 60s psychedelia to modern day mind benders, be sure to catch The
Jackals Live in a town near you.

Featuring Dead World Leaders on tonight’s show.
It is normally at this point where you start reading some waffle that tries to convince you that this band is the “next big thing”. Dead world leaders are four young men playing what they want to hear, with passion. They are not trying to escape any genuine hardship but are instead playing to convey their disappointment and disillusion with the world that’s presented to them.
Andy Martin – Vocals/Guitar
Kyle Hammond – Guitar/Backing Vocals
Dan Ryan – Drums
Rob Nicholson – Bass/Backing Vocals
Tonights we have tracks from The Hardy Souls of Glasgow.
The Hardy Souls are an up and coming band from Glasgow making music because its running in our blood and is urging to burst out in twisting guitar solos and non stop drum fills! Formed in 2008, the lads have great belief in each other, share a mutual love of great music and are very committed to the cause.
The band: Craig O, Camy, Ross, Craig W and Seb – returned to the live scene in June & haven`t looked back since. With fantastic feedback received from each of the return gigs the band are now looking to establish ourselves as “the band to see” and develop more of a following in our home town, gradually branching out from there.

There’s not a lot of info on this band, they are tagged as Crunk Folk, you’ll need to tune in to find out what they are all about, all I can say is that they seem to be playing a lot of good festivals and there music is excellent.
Fresh from there Friday Live Acoustic Session tonight’s show will feature tracks from The Rudiments cd Doctor Bones Fried Medicine. The band came in to the studio on Friday along with Rosscoe McNeil and all the way from London Younghearts, all played some acoustic tracks that got them warmed up for the gig afterwards at The View. R&B is alive.
Thanks guy’s for putting on a great evening.

After the launch of well received first EP ‘Along the Bottom’ in early 2010, The Rudiments have proudly strode on, performing live on a regular basis helping to build up a faithful and ever growing fanbase, not only in their hometown but throughout Scotland and further afield. These gigs inspired them to work towards making their next recording reflect the energy and spirit of the live shows. So as the long, dark winter nights approached the boys got together and agreed to take a break from playing live, batten down the hatches and begin preparations for this record.
At the end of February 2011, after months of rehearsing and writing, they emerged blinking from their bunker, packed their satchels, gathered their instruments and headed for the tiny village of Crawfordjohn deep in the Scottish countryside. Once there, they embarked on the final part of their mission – To trackdown and possibly (with a little bit of luck!) acquire the services of the mythical, and illusive ‘DOCTOR BONE’…
No-one has heard from or seen The Rudiments since that cold February morning when they set off from Glasgow so full of hopes and dreams, but luckily (well, not for them obviously!) a CD of mixed and mastered songs was found by a lake in the woods near the village.

Tonight’s show will feature The Avantist.
From Suburbia, Illinoize, US
Luis Arias – Drums
David Arias- Guitar
Erick Arias – Bass
Fernando Arias – Vox
In the fall of 2008, a group was formed that would challenge the average listener to rethink their idea of what a “rock band” can be. What started off as a furious sessions of “Rock Band” and rants against the current state of popular music, quickly blossomed into an epiphany. Instead of just talking about the lack of variety society is presented with musically, four brothers collectively made it their mission to write universal music without the frills. Thus THE AVANTIST was created. With an energetic and soulful singer in eldest sibling Fernando, and the steady slow rolling groove of bassist (and second oldest) Erick, the chemistry and “hive mind mentality” could only be accomplished with the other two brothers. Their guitarist David usually takes up the role of two different guitars and creates a complex sound with his dynamic playing. Luis, their youngest, has a hard-hitting drumming style that is heavily influenced in vein of Jon Theodore or Thomas Pridgen. Their raw musicality and endless passion (not to mention the electricity of their live shows) gives them a truly unique, yet, epic sound. Their various influences (from The Mars Volta to The Kings of Leon to Deftones and beyond) helped create “Through The Building of Another Window”, their debut EP that is equal parts personal, aggressive and at times, haunting. They worked with sound engineer and producer Yuki Tasaka who recorded their debut EP at Electrical Audio in Chicago, Illinois. For this EP, Yuki had the four record all five tracks live to recreate the energy of their live shows in their studio work.
With everything out the way it’s time to get back to normality, whatever that is! Last week’s show featured York Band Who Shot Bene?, seems like everyone is migrating to York. Must say they do have two of the best venue’s, The Fibber’s Club and The Stone Roses Bar.

An American feel for tonight with Scottish dirty blues band
Dixie Fried.
Dixie Fried are a couple of good mates, who have very similiar taste in good music. We have played in several different local bands over the last 10 years or so, but after just getting together every weekend for around a year getting very drunk and having a jam, we figured why the hell not let people hear our sound. To our complete surprise we found an audience of like minded people who also enjoy our take on good music. We play our take on the blues as good as 2 white guys from Scotland can.
We play deep down and dirty Mississippi Blues Rock, is our best description. Released our first EP on Big Rock Candy Records summer 2010. Album released 3rd July 2011.
If you want info on the band, or interested in booking then please check the contact page for info.

Six Towns http://www.sixtowns.net/enter.cfm
Playlist updated http://www.last.fm/user/Flukeyboy/library/playlists
Tonight on Anything Goes – A true British Indie sound, this band has everything that is good about Indie in there sound.
Six Towns – an exciting, up coming band with great ambitions and the ability to make them a reality”, that’s what industry professional and promoter Mike Tunnicliffe had to say about this 5-piece indie rock and roll band from Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire.
The success of the two releases had already seen the band become well known in the local area and they then began to move further afield with gigs in Manchester and Birmingham before returning to their hometown in late 2010 supporting bands such as Twisted Wheel at Stoke on Trent’s biggest venue. This gig alone generated a lot of interest and the local newspaper latched onto this, reviewing the gig in their weekly entertainment section: “Soon the venue is full to overflowing and Six Towns (aptly called as Stoke is just a lot of towns who have got together) take to the stage. They dedicate a lot of their audience chat time to bigging up ‘The Wheel’ but their own songs are not to be sniffed at. The Story Of Your Life is a boulder of a tune with defiant lyrics: ‘You want to be me but you’ll never see me’. Using a repeated riff over which the rough lyrics bleed, it’s bold and danceable to. The tunes are guitar-led but firm, beating most of commercial radio-played indie rock.
Six Towns have been described by many people as one of the few true rock and roll bands around at the moment. Their dirty riffs and anthem like lyrics have been a breath of fresh air and whilst different, can compliment most other music styles at most venues in the country. Their influences include both old and new ranging from The Rifles, The Music and Kasabian to The Beatles, The Jam and The Kinks. This broad love of music by each member has allowed them to create songs for the people, rather than for themselves. 2011 see’s an exciting year ahead with numerous competitions, a new website and an official music video to come. This is however only a small part of a career plan which extends far beyond this year and as the fan base continues to grow, Six Towns continue to evolve into the rock and roll band of the modern generation.

On This weeks show – Joseph Coward
Joseph Coward’s debut single entitled ‘Jesus Christ’ is released on O Genesis, the new label set up by Tim Burgess of The Charlatans. The release marks the introduction of an 19-year-old talent with a new perspective on a grey and unforgiving suburban environment.
Smartly attired and quietly mannered, Joseph believes music to be about communication. His vocal delivery captures elements of Arthur Russell with a lyrical eloquence of Morrissey as he delivers lyrics loaded with Biblical imagery that seek to explore the self in a hostile world. Routine, boredom, difficult relationships and the confusion of youth are regular themes of his songwriting.
What allows him to stand alone from the singer/songwriter crowd is a raw and emotional energy, and a steadfast clarity of vision.”
