Neil Sturgeon Plays With Fire.

Neil Sturgeon in the DCR Studio

Glasgow musician Neil Sturgeon came in

to the DCR studio on Cowal Games Friday to treat us to an acoustic set of new and old material. As part of The Anything Goes way of life there was no set plan, just go with the flow and flow it did. Neil’s been working  hard as a musician over the past decade as he has now gone on a solo path leaving the Mod influenced band The Goldenhour, two albums in the bag, Beyond The Beyond and Always In The Now, a few tracks from these albums have featured on Anything Goes.   Now with Neil’s eagerly anticipated debut album Geography & Luck coming out soon, he has been doing the rounds this summer with gig’s in Amsterdam, Glasgow South   Side Festival, Edinburgh College of  Art and Whistle Binkies, Glasgow West End Festival and culminating in Glasgow’s Merchant’s Festival. Neil’s new work has mostly been produced at home, whitest some has been produced by Raymond McGinley of Teenage  Fanclub notoriety at The Buzzwagon Studios.

Neil with Luke

With the DCR studio not knowing what to expect Neil kicked off with Bedhopper   and straight away a cool atmosphere was set, people milling in the background came to the fore to see what was going on, numerous messages started to come in from listener’s to find out who was playing and a new following was born without the first set being finished. Pick  track from the first set would have to be Likely Lads Theme/Ride The Tide, the later being  his last single. Finishing up with I Wish I’d Never, you just could not help but tap your feet  to these tunes. With a short break between set’s Neil chose two tracks from his influence’s  and not a bad choice either The Byrd’s – Just A Season and The Charlatans – Try Again  Today. So moving into the second set of the evening Neil now warmed up, treated us to a   blistering  paced set with an excellent Who medley and an alternative version of Always In The Now smoothly  incorporating The Rolling Stones – Play With Fire, which seemed as  though the two had always been part of the same song. With time catching up on us Neil ended the show with The Outdoor Type and just left us wanting more, judging by the response the listener’s wanted more.

PRIMAL SCREAM FOR  DUNOON GIG

PRIMAL SCREAM

As reported here on DCR by DJ Luke on Tuesday Primal Scream are to appear here in Dunoon at the Queens Hall on Saturday 16th June

Celebrating 30 years in the business this year, Bobby Gillespie and co. kick off their Summer with three Scottish shows in preparation for their dates at the Isle Of Wight Festival, the Hop Farm Music Festival and their support slot at the Stone Roses reunion show.

Bobby Gillespie and Co have come a long way together, from the ambient indie-rock sound of the Mercury Prize winning ‘Screamadelica’ to something far darker and more experimental with later albums ‘Exterminator’ and ‘Beautiful Future’. Forever movin’ on up, the band commemorated its 20th anniversary in 2010, performing the seminal ‘Screamadelica’ album live in its entirety.

  1. Anything Goes Features The Epic New Primal Scream Album, More Light.

So Primal Scream fresh from touring Screamadelica released their 10th album yesterday. ON tonight’s show I will be playing tracks from their new album, More Light. On a first listen Primal Scream seem to have been influenced by their Screamadelica Tour. The sound is old skool, more mellow and on a par with their early work. For me the last album was probably their weakest, the new album could possible be one of the bands best bits of work to date. This is the Primal Scream I like, stonsey, trippy and soulful. The album to me is made up of elements of Screamadelica, Give Out But Don’t Give Up and Vanishing Point.
This weeks Rockology brings us the letter Q. Q is for Quintessence, formed in 1969, a Jazz, Psychedelic and Progressive Rock outfit influenced by Indian mysticism. The band were one of the first progressive rock bands signed by Island Records. Part of The Ladbroke Grove set, the band played Glastonbury and Montreux Jazz Festival. The band live performances are stuff of legends, playing long jam out’s to hypnotise their audience’s. The band also had links to Hari Krishna with albums having long Krishna mantras on them. Q is also for Quicksilver Messenger Service. From San Francisco and formed in 1965. The bands sound is made up of a folk and jazz background, the band made it’s name playing at The Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, QMS were signed to Capital Records that year. Owsley Stanley the bands sound engineer record all the bands shows and their second album, Happy Trails, is taken from recordings made at The Fillmore East & West. Key members of the band include John Cipollina and Dino Valenti, also Englishman Nicky Hopkins known more for being in The Jeff Beck group.

  2. Tonight’s Featured Artist Moon Duo

Formed in San Francisco in 2009 by Wooden Shijps guitarist Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada. Moon Duo have 3 e.ps Killing Time, Escape and the mostly instrumental Horror Tour EP.
Record Store Day 2012 brought a limited edition LP Mazes Remixed which featured remixes by the likes of Sonic Boom, Psychic Ills, and Purling Hiss. Their debut album Mazes, recorded in San Francisco and mixed in Berlin during 2010 and their second album Circles is the product of a long winter’s isolation in the Rocky Mountains and was released in 2012.
Also on tonight’s show I will be giving Swinging Mables, The Desert Willows and The Sundancer a spin. This weeks Rockology brings us the letter O. O is for Otis Spann. Otis Spann a leading Chicago Blues pianist from Jackson, Mississippi, Spann began playing piano by age of eight, influenced by his local ivories stalwart, Friday Ford. At the age of 14, he was playing in bands around Jackson. Spann replaced Merriweather as Muddy Waters’ piano player in late 1952, and participated in his first recording session with the band on September 24, 1953. Otis Spann is associated with Chess Records, Decca, Vanguard and Blue Horizon. O is also for Otis Redding. Otis Redding was an American singer and songwriter and a major artist in soul music and rythem and blues. His singing style has been influential among the soul artists of 1960s and helped exemplify the Stax sound. After appearing at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival he wrote and recorded (Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay with Steve Cropper. The song became the first posthumous number-one record in the charts after his death in a plane crash.

  3. Anything Goes Features The Coffins 2nd Album.

Yes those Glasgow Psycobilly punkster’s are back with their 2nd album and over the last year have built up a cult following on the alternative scene, with their dark humour involving day to day life and politics.

Tonight’s show will be a Thatcher Years special. In the wake of her passing The Baroness still provokes memory’s of time like no other in British. Only one other Politician has been graced with a State Funeral (Winston Churchill). Loathed by many and loved by a few, Margaret Thatcher’s time in office was seen by some as the destruction of Britain and by others as the first steps to greatness. I will be playing tracks that sum up her leadership and how the music world saw these times.

This week Rockology brings us the letter N. N is for The Nice. The Nice were an progressive rock band from the 1960s, known for their blend of , jazz rock and classical music. Their début album, The Thoughts Of Emerlist Davjack was released in 1967 to immediate acclaim. It is often considered the first progressive rock album. The Nice are also a forerunner of the much more widely known Emerson, Lake & Palmer. The band took their name from Steve Marriott’s slang term for being high, a term he used in the song “Here Come the Nice”. Marriott originally wanted to give the name to a band he was producing, called The Little People. Andrew Loog Oldham took it upon himself to rename The Little People Apostolic Intervention, and dubbed the Emerson, Jackson, Davison, O’List group “The Nice”. N is also for Nirvana. Nirvana were a British based progressive rock band active in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Though the band only achieved limited commercial success, they were acclaimed both by music industry professionals and critics. Nirvana was created as the performing arm of the London-based song writing partnership of Irish musician Patrick Campbell-Lyons and Greek composer Alex Spyropoulos. On their recordings Campbell-Lyons and Spyropoulos supplied all the vocals. The instrumental work was primarily undertaken by top session musicians and orchestral musicians – with Campbell-Lyons providing a little guitar and Spyropoulos contributing some keyboards. The band appeared on French television with Salvador Dalí, who splashed black paint on them during a performance of their second single “Rainbow Chaser.” Campbell-Lyons kept the jacket, but regrets that Dalí did not sign any of their paint-splashed clothes. Island Records allegedly sent the artist an invoice for the cleaning of Schuster’s cello.

  4. Anything Goes Features The Black Angels – Indigo Meadow

As stated earlier this year when I featured The Black Angels I would feature the new album, well the new album arrived and is called Indigo Meadow. On a brief listen I picked up on a Jesus And Mary Chain thing, now I’ve settled down and given it my full and undevided attention and can say that the band have moved on from 2010’s Phosphene Dream to a more British sounding album. Still with brief glimpses of early Floyd and the American Garage sounds of Rocky Erickson.

So we’ve done away with the playlist, the library is ever growing. Let’s see what happen’s.
This weeks Rockology brings us the letter M. M is for Mayall. John Mayall, the Godfather of British Blues, known for The Bluebreakers and breaking in new guitarist’s. Distinguished guitarist that played with The Bluesbreakers include Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce (Bass), Peter Green, Mick Taylor & Ansley Dunbar. M is also for Misunderstood. The Misunderstood, one of the most notorious bands of draft resisters status. Formed in 1963 in Riverside, California and the moved to England in 1966 to avoid The Draft to Vietnam. A leader in the Garage Rock scene, they were championed by John Peel early in their career and listed as one of his ten greatest performances. Most noteable member of the band, Glen Campbell went on to form Jucy Lucy.

  6. Anything Goes Featuring Kingdom Of The Holy Sun

Formed in early 2012 in Seattle, WA, Kingdom of the Holy Sun offers their twist on psychedelia , by drawing on such genres as the melodic and fuzzed out sounds of garage rock from the 60’s, meditative drones and instrumentation from the Indian Sub-continent, as well as the more recent sounds of neo- psychedelia. These influences form touchstones they use to explore new sonic landscapes. Their psychedelic sound ranges from the repetitive beats of the Monks (A Go Go) to The Doors inspired gems (Her sweet delight) to hypnotic drones of Spacemen 3 (Pharmacokinetics). Live shows often include colorful visuals and liquid light show. In addition, their sound has been compared The Velvet Underground, Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Black Angels.

So, let’s do away with the playlist. What am I playing. Tune in and find out? Today’s letter in Rockology is the letter L. L is for Love. Love was an American rock group of the late 1960s and early 1970s. They were led by singer/songwriter Arthur Lee. One of the first racially diverse American bands, their music reflected different influences, combining elements of rock and roll, garage rock, folk and psychedelia. L is also for Led Zeppelin. Led Zeppelin were an English rock band formed in London in 1968. The band consisted of guitarist Jimmy Page, singer Robert Plant, bassist/keyboardist John Paul Jones, and drummer John Bonham. They are widely considered to be one of the most successful, innovative and influential rock groups in history. Due to the heavy, guitar-driven blues rock sound of their first two albums, Led Zeppelin are frequently recognised as one of the progenitors of heavy metal.

  7. Anything Goes Featuring Allah-Las

Allah-Las come from Los Angeles, California and were formed in 2008. They are a 4 piece band playing Beat, R’n'B, Psychedelic pop and Northern Soul to the tune of The Kinks, The Zombies, Love and even a guitar playing style similar to Peter Green. Their track Catamaran was named as one of the top tracks of the year by Daytrotter (2012). Their self-titled debut album was released at the back end of last year. They are currently touring with The Black Angels

Also on tonight’s show I will be talking about Record Store Day and playing some tracks in relation to this. I will be playing new tracks from The Jar Family and The Desert Willows, I have also managed to acquire a track or two from The Beatroots, who are playing in Glasgow at McHuills on Friday night and in London on Sunday at Le Beat Bespoke Weekender at 229 The Venue, Great Portland Street. The weeks Rockology brings us the letter K. K is for Keef Hartley. Keef Hartley was the backbone to John Mayall, his fist foray in to music was to replace Ringo Star in Rory Storm And The Hurricanes and then followed by The Artwoods, a freakbeat band featuring Art Wood (Ron Woods brother) and John Lord. Keef Hartley went on to drum for John Mayall after The Bluesbreakers and also played Woodstock with his own band, The Keef Hartley Big Band. K is also for King Crimson. King Crimson formed in 1968 and supported The Rolling Stones at the now legendary Hyde Park gig in 1969. King Crimson are imortilised in rock history with their epic debut album In The Court Of The Crimson King which took rock music to another level, the birth of Prog Rock. Original members of the band include Robert Fripp and Greg Lake, King Crimson are associated with Island Records and The Canterbury Scene.

  11. Anything Goes Featuring Damn Vandals.

This weeks featured artist Damn Vandals come from London. I will be playing tracks from their acclaimed album Done For Desire, yes I did get sent this a while ago, but you know how it is. Lot’s of cd’s get sent in to me and some get misplaced. I would have definitely featured this when I received it, there is never such a thing as too late. So, in the time of being sent this to now, the band have traveled far. The music press hailing them with godlike status and the album being placed on a few blogger’s Albums of 2012. Damn Vandals have that classic early 90’s indie sound mixed with great lyrics.

Well, time to change the show around, now that we have the Best Of British following me after midnight and being Hendrix’d on last weeks show, I’ve decided to change the running order around to make sure the right tracks get played. Anyway, on this weeks show I will be playing tracks from Milltown Brothers, The High Writers, Neil Sturgeon, Sugar Mama and The Desert Willows. I may even throw in the end of last weeks show at the start. This weekend see’s March Of The Mod’s so I may throw in some Mod stuff and even a track from The Beat Movement. This weeks Rockology brings us the letter J. J is for Jefferson Airplane. Jefferson Airplane formed in San Francisco in 1965, pioneer’s of The American Psychedelic movement, the band played at legendery festival’s Monteray and Woodstock, iconic albums include Surrealistic Pillow, After Bathing At Baxter’s and Volunteer’s. The bands line up is more like a Who’s Who of American Legends. Paul Kantner, Marty Balin, Jack Cassidy, Skip Spencer, Grace Slick, Papa John Creach and David Friedberg. J is also for Jethro Tull. Jethro Tull formed in 1967 as a Blues/Folk Rock act. Jethro Tull’s career has spanned over 40 years and the band has sold around 60 million albums. Jethro Tull noted for Ian Anderson playing flute whilst stood on one leg, Iconic albums include This Was, Stand Up, Aqualung and Thick As A Brick.

Playing tracks from Jimi Hendix’s new album People, Hell & Angels on tonight’s show. The album released on the 5th March is a companion to his last album Valleys Of Neptune released in 2010. The album features unreleased material and tracks built on previous works, with the likes of Stephen Stiles, Lonnie Youngblood and Albert Allen, the album shows the direction Jimi Hendrix was taking prior to his death. Tonight’s featured artist come from Montreal, Canada. Tonight I’ll playing tracks from there self-titled album, Elephant Stone. With the album only just out we may have an album of the year or best newcomer on the scene. Playing freaky danceable Madchester/Psychedelic/Cornershop music fused with mid 60’s Who/Kinks/LordSitar this band has the potential to take 2013 by storm, it seems the early indie Manchester sound has filtered across the water and this band would feel at home at The Hacienda. Let’s just say it’s an 8 out of 10 album from Anything Goes,.

    Get Yeah Tabla’s Out!

Also on tonight’s show we will have track’s from Dead Sons, The Black Angels, blur, The Litter, Paul Weller and more.

Today’s Rockology bring us the letter H. H is for Harvey Mandel. Harvey Mandel is an American

  17. Anything Goes Featuring The Heavy Eyes

Heavy Eyes, fuzzy guitars and feedback, sounding like it’s 1969. The Heavy Eyes have a heavy sound with influences from Hendrix, Jeff Beck, R.L Burnside, Buddy Guy & Cream. This is a band that I would love to see live, from listening to the studio material I can only imagine you would be left drained of all energy by the end of a show. I’ve never come across a modern band who list’s Leaf Hound as in influence or even know who they are. The Heavy Eyes best described as Grungy Hendrix Prog Rock. From Memphis, Tennessee & Olive Branch, Mississippi, US

  18. Anything Goes Featuring Holy Coves.

From the ashes of Holyhead shoegaze rockers The Lizzies, Holy Coves first began to blossom in spring 2009. The remaining duet of Scott Marsden and Jimmy Eggleton were intent on bringing fresh and innovative ideas to the new project. Both held similar influences, though the subtle differences between would soon help bring depth and originality to their sound.
Holy Coves continued to develop, creating a fusion of driven amps and heavy distortion, welded with a psychedelic, pitch-shifting tremolo. Complimented by articulate song writing and meticulous structures, a blend of psych rock and sexy, sleazy rock ‘n’ roll emerged. And with it a sound well received as they toured some of the finest, most prestigious venues on British unsigned circuit.
Holy is from their home town of Holyhead, it’s known as The Holy Island, coves is an old Cockney slang word for geezers or criminals.

Also on tonight’s I will be playing a new track from Drunk Mule, tracks from Scottish Fiction e.p released late lasts year which features Drunk Mule, tracks from Ride, Verve, Rolling Stones, The Sundancer. The Skywalkers are a Dutch Freakbeat band formed in 2009, inspired by the Feakbeat Scene in Britain from 1966-67. The band seem to know their British bands and their album One Year has lots of influence from this period, although best described by me as a mash up of Syd Barrett Pink Floyd and Madchester stalwarts The Inspiral Carpets.

  26. Anything Goes Featuring Inner Planets

An original band in Rochester, NY USA, with heavy psychedelic influences, sort of a jam band meets ambient, meets the Talking Heads kind of thing..

Mike and Lou first joined up in ‘The Window Room.’ After that band ended in 2007, Lou continued on with other projects, including ‘Strange Montgomery’ and ‘11n2′ It was within ‘11n2′ that Lou met Dave. With the itch to create something new, Lou contacted Mike Fall 2009 about starting a new project. This is when Lou mentioned that the drummer in his previous project might be interested in playing in this yet-to-be-named project. Rehearsals started that Fall and have continue into the Winter. Shelby Bedzyk joined Inner Planets in March 2010 and greatly expands our ability to jam out. Unfortunately, Dave Marley had competing time commitments and decided to leave Inner Planets and the end of September 2010. Dan Braun has joined as Dave’s replacement in November 2010.

  27. Anything Goes Featuring Apache Dropout

This evenings show will feature Apache Dropout from Bloomington, Indiana.A 3 piece psyched-out boogie-fied garage band.
From the band’s website:Apache Dropout is a full on lysergic boogie trio from Southern Indiana who’ve self-released a handful of recordings while touring the sub-U.S. during the past couple years. Finally, their début LP is here to catch you up with their three-minute-&-less anthems crafted of ‘60sepoch fuzz. With just guitar/bass/drums they channel soul melodies, primitive rock thump and blasted solos that are soaked in the dimethyl-trip of teenage visions (see songs “Sam Phillips Rising” and “God Bless You Johan Kugelberg” for that) and a few whifs of Tuli Kupferberg. Singer Sonny Alexander is the enigmatic howler /vocalist whose guitar swagger and melted riffs lead the way. Recorded by the band at their own Magnetic South Studio on all analogue equipment, they’ve used the studio-as-instrument to push these 11 songs into highly textured nuggets of punk art that follow in the wave of The 13th Floor Elevators, The Velvets, and Patti Smith Group. We’ve got no doubt, this is going to floor all ears in 2011.Album art and horn arrangements come by way of John Terrill (co-founder of the late ’70s new/no wave Dancing Cigarettes) with engineering by Puppy Vs. Dyslexia knob-twiddler John Dawson and final audio polishing by engineer Paul “Z” Mahern, vocalist of the legendary Zero Boys

  33. Anything Goes Featuring The Jar Family on Dunoon Community Radio 97.4FM tonight from 22hrs

Featuring on Anything Goes DCR tonight The Jar Family. Formed in 2010, Hartlepool band The Jar Family is a collective of singer-songwriters Max Bianco, Dali, Al Devon, Richie Docherty, Chris Hooks and former Squeeze bassist Keith Wilkinson.
Providing an escape from the backdrop of their home town’s economic hardships, and driven by a collective will to succeed, The Jar Family have forged a distinctive style of north-east blues & roots, uniquely coined as ‘Industrial folk rock’, which, following a series of sell-out acoustic shows, and the July 2010 release of their now highly collectable ‘Livingston Studio E.P.’, the band quickly built a loyal fan-base.
Having amassed such a sizeable collection of songs, the band decamped to the seminal Sawmill Studio to record ‘The Jar Family Album’ in June 2011, but not before adding the in-demand Kerry ‘jubjub’ Edwards on Cajon to complete the 7-piece line-up. Produced by Keith Wilkinson, the album was then mixed by the legendary John Cornfield (Muse, Supergrass, Razorlight, Oasis, Athlete).
In addition to being very well received by the national music press, their debut single, ‘Poolie Strut’ became the most requested song in Radio Hartlepool’s history and has since been played at all of Hartlepool United’s home matches, leading to the home faithful chanting the song on the terraces.
November 2011 then saw the release of The Jar Family’s second single ‘In For A Penny’ which preceded the band’s first ever UK tour, supporting the infamous Alabama 3, gaining them many new fans as they further enhanced their reputation as the north-east’s buzz band.
This year they have opened for Ocean Colour Scene’s Steve Craddock, followed by a run of tour dates and festival appearances across the UK, including slots opening for The Charlatans and Babyshambles, Ren Harvieu, The Sunshine Underground, King Charles, Jake Bugg etc., as they prepare for the release of their new single, ‘Broken Minded’ on August 6th. Their debut album ‘The Jar Family Album’ is available on i-tunes and will soon be available in selected stores as well as from the bands sparkling new online store.

  34. Anything Goes after The Cowal Gathering. says:

Apologies for the lack of show last Tuesday, a touch of flu. So last weeks show this week with some new bits. This week’s feature will be Stephanie Manns of the Scottish Country scene. Stephanine is known to us here at DCR after playing at The Celtic Connection earlier in the year, also some of the band have been featured on my show last year and are well known on the Glasgow scene ( The Hardy Souls). So my challenge for this weeks show is to feature a genre I don’t normaly feature and get a playlist to fit.

Stephanie Manns started her musical career with her first official gig at Jersey Opera House supporting Blues legend Joan Armatrading, having only a handful of open mic sessions to her name. Since leaving Jersey and moving to Glasgow, Stephanie has played Scottish Folk Festival Celtic Connections, supported Brit Award winner Emili Sandé, Ultravox’s Midge Ure and her song writing hero Scotland’s own Jill Jackson. Her song writing has been heavily influenced by Johnny Cash, Carole King, James Taylor, and her musical direction goes from strength to strength.

Also in tonights show I will playing the unsual mish mash of alternative music. The Classic Back To Back will be from The Who and Edgar Broughton Band. With the news of the deaths of George Gallacher (The Poets) and Neil Armstrong ( Astronaut ) I will be playing tracks for them in tribute.

The Detours from Caernarfon, Wales, they sound like they have the swagger of early Oasis and have a punch to match. They consists of: Arron Hughes (guitarist/songwriter), Iwan Fon (lead singer/songwriter), Carwyn Jones (bass), and Guto Howels (drums). Being 18-19 years of age, they provide new perspective on rock’n’roll, although they also possess an impressive maturity in their musical talent.

“Our main inspirations are The Beatles and Oasis, British rock’n’roll and independent music! It’s all for the ‘Do It Yourself’ and ‘be yourself’ attitude.”-Arron Hughes

Well with the Olympics over I’m just going to have a quite night in, not, tonight’s show is gonna be loud. 39. Tonight’s Anything Goes DCR will be an Olympic Special in honour of TeamGB Olympics 2012. We are just over halfway through and so far it’s been the greatest Olympics yet. As I write this we currently have 19 Gold, 12 Silver, 12 Bronze and a
    total of 43 medals. Outstanding.
Tonight’s featured artist will be Guards from New York.

Guards was formed in New York City when Richie James Follin returned from a European tour to a recording studio with nothing in it but a broken electric 12 string guitar and an omni chord. He wrote and recorded a few songs for his little sister to sing on, but ended up singing on the songs himself. He enlisted the help of his friends (Caroline Polachek of Chairlift, James Richardson of MGMT, Loren Shane Humphrey of Willowz) and family (Madeline Follin of Cults) to guest on some songs and they spread the word without his knowledge via twitter and the internet. Richie James Follin is 27 and he is originally from southern California. He started the Willowz (lead singer and guitarist) when he was 19 in 2002 and has released 4 records with them as well as a solo record and multiple other projects. He also plays guitar in Cults.

I will also be playing tracks for Andy Murray, Bradley Wiggins, Victoria Pendleton, TeamGB and more.
