During World War 2 I was an evacuee in Dunoon from Dalmarnock Glasgow for about 5 years. I stayed in various houses in the town including "Dunrod" in Alexander Street. My mother had an an aunt called Davida Reid who owned the house and I have lovely fond memories of her and the house. There used to be a "Monkey Puzzle" tree in the garden which has now gone. Lovely memories indeed. I played pipes with Kilsyth Thistle Pipe Band for the period 1970 - 1990 and went to the Cowal Games with the band winning the grade 4 competition twice and other prizes too. I spent the bulk of my primary education at Dunoon Grammar School and at the end of the war returned to Glasgow. Because of age I haven't attended the Cowal Games for a number of years now but I am happy to say that my son and grandson are continuing the Dunoon connection with Kilsyth Pipe Band. I love Dunoon and the area it is a bonny place full of personal memories for me.

just read your stuff on Burns and Homecoming as I was looking for possible gig contacts in Dunoon.

The band I am singer with, The Bum-Clocks ( auls Scots for 'beetles' ) are part of Homecoming and we are touring Scotland this year to celebrate Robert Burns with our 'Tale O' Twa Dugs - Rab & Iggy ' which explores the hitherto unknown relationship between Burns and Iggy Pop. We would love to play Dunoon.

You can hear and see what we are up to at our website www.burns250.com or our myspace page.

Hi Guys, seems like everyone is paying tribuite to the Bard --and rightly so. Did you see that Prince Charles has now paid tribute to Robert Burns' 250th birthday by reciting two of the Bard's best-known poems for a major new archive of his work.
His backing for the Homecoming celebrations came as it emerged almost 3,000 Burns Suppers were now signed up to take part.
A host of big names have also been confirmed for the official gala Burns Supper at Alloway, the Ayrshire birthplace of the poet, that First Minister Alex Salmond is hosting on Saturday.
The prince recorded his take of My Luve Is Like A Red Red Rose and My Heart Is In The Highlands at Dumfries House in Ayrshire earlier this week. Robbie Coltrane, Robert Carlyle, Alan Cumming and Bill Paterson have helped create a new online record of Burns's work, to be launched by the BBC on Sunday.
The centrepiece Burns Supper of the Homecoming celebrations will feature performances by singers and musicians Sandi Thom, Karen Matheson, Karine Polwart, James Grant and Roddy Hart.
It's good to see you guys at Dunoon Community Radio getting behind the Homecoming Scotland 2009.Good Luck for the future.

Homecoming and The Worldwide Toast to Robert Burns

Greetings from Steve Higson Falkirk

Please can you help us in our quest for the Worldwide Toast to Robert Burns!

As proud and passionate Scots we have decided in this Homecoming Scotland Year to co-ordinate a Worldwide Toast for the Bard.

How to take part can be seen at this link: http://www.worldwidetoasttorobertburns.com/content/view/70/91/

Perhaps you could ask the supporters at your next Home Match to raises an Irn Bru or Bovril in a Toast to "The Immortal Memory of Robert Burns' and join the worldwide total celebrating the Bards' 250th Anniversary and the start of our Homecoming Year and then follow the links below to add the numbers to the total? It would be great if you could also ask people who are attending Burns Suppers to also log-in and add their numbers!

Taking part in the Toast is easy:
1. All we ask if for groups, large or small, to gather together.
2. Raise a glass in a toast to "The Immortal Memory of Robert Burns."
3. Count the number of people 'Toasting'
4. Log on and complete a simple on-line form to record your toast details so that your numbers can be counted as part of the worldwide total.

It would be great if you could send us pictures and video clips for us to show on the website. Thank you!

Counting has already started with the Sons of Scotland in Canada and The Caledonia Society of Alabama already adding their numbers to the worldwide total.

We are also fundraising for the new Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Alloway. Shonaig Macpherson, Chairman of the NTS, referred to the campaign as "an exciting project" and the thrilling yet simple "Donate a Pound Campaign' will give the opportunity for all corners of the globe to contribute a single pound so that everyone can help to "give something back to Burns.'

I hope that you can join in and encourage others also to make this the best celebration of Burns in History!!

Robert is also looking for support at:
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1103191906&ref=name
Twitter: http://twitter.com/worldwidetoast

All the very best
