Celtic Music Radio presenter, Mike Ritchie, has come out top of a leading music website’s 2017 readers’ poll.

The Mike Ritchie On Sunday Show has been voted the Best Radio Show in a vote run by the influential Americana-UK website.

Mike, a runner-up to BBC legend Bob Harris in this category twelve months ago, has been announced as this year’s winner by website editor, Mark Whitfield, who said:

“I’m delighted that Mike’s Celtic Music Radio programme has been voted best radio show by Americana UK readers this year.

“He’s a fantastic ambassador for Americana in the UK and along with Bob Harris probably does more for the genre than anyone else on air.

“He’ll often play not just established names but up and coming acts who might struggle to get exposure elsewhere. Well done to Mike.”

Mike’s show goes out live every Sunday between 4 and 6 pm, and features a mix of Americana, alt.country, roots, bluegrass and singer/songwriters.

Chair of charity-status, Glasgow-based, Celtic Music Radio 95FM’s board of directors, Alex Jenkins, said: “It’s a special moment when a community-based station run by volunteers gets recognition in this manner.

“It’s a great accolade for Mike. For one of our presenters to win an award through a public vote is a real achievement, especially when a broadcasting giant such as Bob Harris is in the mix.

“All of us at the station know how much Mike loves the music he plays and the hard work he puts in to each and every show.

“He includes brand new music as well as personal favourites and he’s keen to support new acts, with many from Scotland. As a result, more and more people are listening in.

“All of us at Celtic Music Radio are absolutely delighted by this result and the recognition Mike’s win gives us.”

Mike said: “I am unbelievably pleased for Celtic Music Radio and totally taken aback to learn that so many people like my show.

“I love producing and presenting it, so a huge thanks to all the Americana-uk readers who voted for me and to all who listen in regularly for two hours on Sunday afternoons for their warmth and genuine encouragement.

“I am really grateful to all the talented bands and singer/songwriters plus the music label promo teams who suggest such terrific, new music for me to play.

“My fellow volunteers at the station are just brilliant – it’s been fun and they have helped me endlessly and enormously over the past four years.

“Finally, no-one is better than Whispering Bob – who’s won the award many times – least of all me. He is a brilliant broadcaster, a legend who has been at the forefront of radio music for so long and I’m a big fan.

“While I’m a newcomer by comparison, I’m chuffed to be an award-winning broadcaster, like him now.”

HumzaYousafMSP20110507

As you may have  heard, the Transport Minister Humza Yousaf MSP has made a statement on the future of the Gourock-Dunoon ferry service

The current service is to be extended until the end of next year

Plus, the tender process for a passenger and vehicle ferry service has been “unpaused”

CHARLES-FLETCHER1

Transport Minister Humza Yousaf told our Parliamentary commentator Charles Fletcher  from Caledonia Media’s “The Week in Holyrood”:

“This ensures there is certainty for the future. Unpausing is the only realistic way to secure the passenger-vehicle service and letting that tender run its course.”

The summary :

This is an interim report it will be followed by a final report in the spring 2018.

The current contract for Dunoon Gourock will be extended to December 2018

The application of teckal doctrine will be explored to be applied if possible to the passenger element. It says there could be a return of a vehicle carrying vessel

DCR97.4FM “PERPETUAL DREAMS” PRESENTER PUBLISHES HIS “CAMINO DREAM” BOOK

IAIN

“I didn’t realise at the time that at the end of a day’s walking on the Camino de Santiago, when I was tired but happy, that the thoughts I was writing down would one day be a book. I’m proud that I’ve written this and hope that one day it inspires someone to do something they dream about.”

My first book – “My Camino Dream” Iain McKie December 2017

iain book

ian-mckie-3-300x225

Iain McKie presented his first programme here on Dunoon Community Radio on the 15th December 2015 , some of you will remember Iain was first introduced to the listeners as a guest on Tuesday’s TLLLVLBS with Victor and Carol and made such an impression not only with the DCR97.4FM team but with the listeners that he was asked to return the following week and then the next and now has been given his very own programme.

Iain’s weekly show “perpetual dreams” is a time to sit back, have fun and listen to a incredible variety of music, many tunes the choice of the listeners. There is also the chance to talk about some of the positive things in life with a weekly inspirational quote while Iain will look at the fun side of any issues that may require help with.

Since the start of his programme Iain has invited guest into the studio to chat not only well known personalities but folk talking about social issues and community matters and even medical issues such as the Vaginal Mesh controversy always keen to bring to his listeners attention important matters that need a wee push.

Iain-Profile-300x206

Iain is always ready to promote achievement of groups or individuals be it folk involved in the arts or physical activities like  a youngster’s baton Twirlers troupe or championing local girl Rachel Bowie Scotland B team captain.

It wasn’t long after Iain started his programme when he started telling his listeners about a book he was reading and how inspirational he was finding it and he knew there was something he really had to do which was ‘The Camino de Santiago”

IAIN-300x168

‘The Camino de Santiago also known by the English name  Way of St James is the name of any of the pilgrimage routes, known as pilgrim ways,  to the shrine of the apostle St. James the Great in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain, where tradition has it that the remains of the saint are buried.                                                                                                                                                                                        Many take up this route as a form of spiritual path or retreat for their spiritual growth.

In February 2016 Iain gave details of his quest and promised to keep everyone informed by creating a blog on social media and wouldl try to add to it as often as he could he would also paint one picture a day.

Iain did tell his listeners that he had trouble writing a shopping list and as for drawing his only experience was the “Art” classes he had recently been attending as an interesting topic to talk to his listeners about.

IAIN-DREAM-3-224x300

The seriousness of the quest became very apparent when Iain took to weighing items of clothing on his programme as every single item he would take had to be weighed and be part of a calculated total weight he would carry over 500 miles.

COUNTRY BLUES LEGEND MISSISSIPPI JOHN HURT TO BE REMEMBERED IN 2018 UK CONCERT TOUR

A CONCERT tour planned for 2018 will remember the life and times of country blues legend Mississippi John Hurt.

blue john media

The show, featuring Mississippi John Hurt biographer, musician and DCR97.4FM broadcaster  Dunoon’s Dr Phil and country blues musician Blue John, will celebrate the 90th anniversary of Hurt’s legendary 1928 recordings for the Okeh label.

Promoters, concert venues, folk clubs and house concert organisers throughout the UK are being invited to book the show.

Dr Phil (Phil Ratcliffe) – who wrote the critically acclaimed biography Mississippi John Hurt, His Life, His Times, His Blues, will tell the story of Hurt from his birth (his parents were freed slaves), the trials and tribulations of being black in rural Mississippi in the first half of the 20th century, Hurt’s first recordings and his later life-changing re-discovery.

DR-PHIL-JOHN-HURT-207x300

The story is one that absolutely captivates music fans (see below for more details).

The show will feature lots of Mississippi John Hurt’s songs performed live plus the playing of rare examples of his original 78 rpm records from 1928 played on a 1920s wind-up Victrola phonograph.

As well as musical performances by Dr Phil there will also be a set by Blue John (John Gregory), a country blues guitarist and singer who performs solo and as part of the blues duo Blue John and Papa Cass.

Dr Phil and Blue John will also team up for some duo performances as part of the show. They are no strangers to performing together as they were the special guests during world-renowned country blues guitarist Ari Eisinger’s 2017 British Isles tour.

To book this show contact John at bluejohnmedia@hotmail.co.uk or Dr Phil at dr.ratcliffe@btconnect.com

Further information:

Mississippi John Hurt by Dr Phil

Outside of the small Delta town of Avalon, Mississippi, only a small group of music aficionados had heard of Mississippi John Hurt (1892–1966) until after he turned seventy-one years old in 1963. His early recordings, made in 1928, made him an icon of the country blues.

His parents were slaves, released at the end of the Civil War. Young John Hurt learned to play guitar, playing the popular old-timey tunes of the time and was soon entertaining at family gatherings. During his lifetime two white men, interested in his music, knocked on the door of his little shotgun house.

The first was Tommy Rockwell from the Okeh Record Company in late 1927 or early 1928, who asked him to travel to Memphis to record. John was 35 years old. Eight sides were recorded at the McCall Building, Memphis ninety years ago on February 14th 1928. The Great Depression set in and John returned home to Avalon and lived there for over thirty years until he received the second knock on his door from a white man interested in his music.

Young hippie, Tom Hoskins, one of a handful of aficionados that had heard of Mississippi John Hurt’s early recordings, had long wondered what happened to the old blues musicians. Following a clue from one of the rarest of the early records, Hoskins drove down to Avalon, Mississippi to search for traces of Mississippi John Hurt. It was March, 1963 when Hoskins asked at the Avalon Country Store and gas station whether anyone ever heard of a musician called Mississippi John Hurt. He was astonished to be told, ‘second mail box on the left up the dirt road; that’s where you’ll find John.’

Following his rediscovery, John enjoyed his new-found fame, more money than he had been accustomed to, and the adoration of his young fans, but he cannot have imagined that over fifty years later his name and his music would be even more well-known and would be enjoyed by increasing numbers of fans. Or that ninety years later we would be celebrating the day that he made those very first recordings that led to his fame. It seems that this gentle, humble man from rural Mississippi will be remembered for ever, and rightly so.
