Royal National Mod

The 2009 Royal National Mod got under way in Oban on Friday night with the opening ceremony attended by various dignatries including Culture Secretary Mike Russell. The competitions began on Saturday with fiddlers, pipers and children; and I am pleased to report that 2 of Cowals youngsters where successful with Arlene Mackecknie from Strachur winning the Bronze Badge in the Fiddle Open under 13 playing a slow gaelic air and march, strathspey reel competition. While Iona Cairns from Dunoon Grammar School also won a Bronze Badge in the Sabhal Mor Ostaig Silver Medal Poetry Recitation for under 13 learners.
